Asus shows off new 1080p prime

Will keep my prime. 1080p ? I'll use my 61" JVC for that. WiFi is a non-issue for me! Still feel Asus owes me for GPS issue though , as it "WAS" a spec listed when I purchased it !

I think I saw it was dual-core. So I'll stick with my prime. I almost bought a transformer1 but held out for this.... Not going to keep holding out or I'd never get a tablet.

My prime is going back after I taste ICS. It's not because of the new model but because my WIFI sucks, the GPS doesn't work, the screen sometimes scrambles, and so far the battery life hasn't been very good.

Guaranteed that Asus are already working on the next 2 tabs. My mate at Motorola says they're already working on the next 2 xooms due for release this year.

The next Prime is likely to be a 12" version, so even the version announced in this thread is already about to be superceded.

I suppose I'm more discouraged than outraged. I absolutely love this tablet; it's rarely out of my hands when I'm home. But it's obvious now that ASUS knew about the WiFi and GPS issues before releasing the tablet. If they offered early adopters a fix (like Apple did with the iPhone 4 antenna issue), I'd be happy. Maybe there's strength in numbers? I'm planning to email ASUS soon to say that I love the Prime, but this is unacceptable. I'm not sure what a fix would look like, though. A trade-in program for the Prime HD? Not going to happen, but I can dream, can't I?

The new one coming out is definitely quad core, but I agree no need to keep waiting on something better as there will always be something better coming.

Unless of course you have to have a 1080p tablet, the wifi/gps issues are a concern of mine but I am not sure how bad it actually is.

i could care less about the 1080p screen and could care less about the gps. i haven't had any wifi issues either. i also understand that as soon as something is in my hands, it is outdated. that all said, i got the prime only by stumbling across an article when i was looking up the original transformer and pretty set on getting it. of all the tablets i looked, it had what i thought was the best for me specs. so when i found the prime, i thought it was even better. i also figured that if this is the second generation of the tablet, any issues they had would be worked out. that doesn't seem to be the case here. instead it's one of the versions of the 2nd generation that is getting the fixes. that's my issue.

My knee-jerk reaction was to cancel my TP order. I even picked up the phone and dialed my vendor. But then a few things made me reconsider:

1) Q2 is anywhere from April-Jun. Even if they split the difference, that's 4-5 months away. If it's even slightly delayed, that's 6-7 months away.

2) It's $100 more.

3) The only real difference is the screen res, but none of the hands on were gushing about the increased res. "It looked crisper" isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.

So should I wait around 6 months to pay $100 more for a screen that will take more power and possibly slow down processing? And although I'm not really that big into aesthetics, the back of the TP looks a helluva lot nicer than the newer model.

So I'm going to stick with the TP for now. The new model seems to be on deck to complete with the iPad 3 and its presumed 2048 X 1572 screen.

Its not the only difference. It has the shell that the original Prime should have. The screen spec is simply a smoke screen. Its so they can market it as a new, difference Prime. Otherwise its the TF201 with the shell it should have had to begin with.

Ugh. I have been waiting for the TP to be in stock anywhere. Now I can stop and wait even longer for the updated TP. Hopefully its early Q2. Maybe that is why there aren't any Transformer Primes anywhere? They halted production for an updated version?

Yeah, I have a feeling the current Transformer Prime may be vaporware.. Sigh.

You guys tempted by the TF700 do realise that as soon as they release that, they'll then announce a 12" version, which you'll be tempted by, or even an update to the 10.1" version with a 1.5ghz processor and the newly announce thinner gorilla glass, for example.

If the TF700 was more powerful and had a larger screen, I'd have gone for it. As it stands, I can't see the need to wait until May and pay an extra

I had a post about the last Gen screen on the prime not very long ago. I was concerned it would make an item I was searching and searching to purchase dated way to fast. I would have bought a prime if they had them in stores by January 1st. Now I am glad I waited.

I hate to say it but the next Gen tablets will all be 1080p screens. Thar makes me wonder if developers will mostly develop for that resolution moving forward. Especially if the ipad 3 gets an even better screen.

Lets face facts. Most high end apps are created for the ipad and some find their way to android. It sucks but its true.

And what's up with a company announcing an upgraded product when they can't even release the one from a month ago in most places yet.

my heart sank (and that feeling quickly gave way to being ticked) when i saw this news yesterday, as my TP is arriving today (i just checked my tracking number, and it's out for delivery right now!). from a tech standpoint, there's not much worse feeling than spending 500 bones and finding out that your new toy is already obsolete (a la Bionic owners)...

but now that i've had a day to process, i think i may just stick with my TP. this may be rationalization on my part (because i really want a tablet now), but there are a few reasons why, for me, waiting for the new version doesn't make sense. first and foremost, Asus has targeted Q2 for the release. but, as Asus has demonstrated with the TP, targeted release dates don't mean much. i wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see this new model until Aug - and that's just too long to wait. besides, in this area, we all know when we buy a tech product, it's going to be outdated in 6-8 months.

higher screen res would be nice; but, i don't think i would really notice it, a higher res isn't really all that important for my uses, and it's not worth waiting 6-8 months for.

for most people, i would imagine the "enhanced WiFi/GPS" function (a euphemistic way of saying "we've fixed a defect") is probably the main attraction. but, i won't be using my tablet for GPS functions. the WiFi issue does give me some pause, and i am going to be keeping a close eye on my WiFi signal. but, 98% of the time, i'm connected to wifi at home or at the office, and i doubt it's going to be much of an issue. for the other 2% of the time, if i run into problems, i can always tether using my rooted GNex.

again, this may be rationalization, but i plan on cracking the box this afternoon and enjoying my TP. if it turns out to be bug-laden (which i highly doubt, given all the reviews), then i'll take it back and suffer the long wait for the new TP...

But when you get the next version, it'll be superceded within a month or two by the announcement of a better version, if not by Asus, then by a competitor.

My close freind is head of Android Product Development for Motorola, and some of the tablet tech heading our way in the next 12 months is awesome. Motorola already have the successor to the Xoom 2 completed and being manufactured now, plus another 2 models - a 12" version and a higher-end version.

Asus are no doubt doing the same. They're already working on the next two tablets to follow the TF700, so this is in itself also already out of date.

And the day you place your order for the TF700, Asus will announce their next one or two tablets due for release a few months down the line.

There is always a new device around the corner.....Duh!!!

I need a functional GPS so I will wait for one that works.

As long as the price point for the two tablets remains the same, I'll be content. The way I figure, the $100 difference is going to be attributed to the screen difference. If thats the only big thing, I'm going to be happy with my current Prime. Now if the $100 difference was to say a 1.8 quad core was installed, I'd be kinda ticked. But as it stands, I'm happy to have a 10 inch tablet with a price mark under $600, that has pretty much the same specs.

But then again, I'm like many of the other posters who don't feel that the GPS issue(s) are a deal breaker. Nor do I feel like I'm experiencing any major WIFI issues. So overall my first tablet experience has been a very good one.

my TP got delivered a little early! powered on just fine, and immediately updated to ICS 4.0.3!

so far, i don't seem to be having much problems with wifi. i put my TP and GNex next to each other, and the TP was actually registering a slightly stronger wifi signal.

now, off to play!

I returned my Prime today. Not so that I get the TF700 in particular but I did have wifi issues. It was only when I did speed tests next to my TF101 I discovered the real problem. The extra processing power made it look like it was faster than my original.

Missing it though!
