Omnia 2-->Galaxy Nexus :)

It was the 11th hour of my Verizon contract for the Omnia 2, and it was time to think about an upgrade. Didn't want to make a quick decision, so I figured I'd call the Verizon Wireless store to ask about the status of my contract. I knew that if I went there in person, the sales reps would put a lot of pressure on me :). So I called, and she said you can only ask about your contract IN PERSON :D! Very slick, Verizon :D! So I went there, and of course the rep pounced :D!

I said I didn't want the iphone because it would draw unwanted criminal attention my way :). When I'm on my Omnia 2, the first thing a thug asks is if its an iphone. People have gotten their iphones snatched. So I wanted the best competitor. So he showed me the Nexus. I thought my Omnia 2 had a big screen, but the Nexus is even bigger than that, and its HD. It has a slim, sleak look to it.

Of course I'll find a ton of apps for it, but its interesting that my Omnia 2 came packs with a TON of apps and programs, while there's only a couple dozen here...The Omnia 2 not only had the Samsung Widgets, but it also had 3-4 pages of Windows

<snipped for sanity> :) ;)

programs and apps. So initially I was like, where's the STUFF :)? Thsats okay, I'll take care of that with Android Market. There's movie app here, and I previewed the Thing, and I was blown away by the picture quality!

Sorry about that...I'm typing on my Samsung Galaxy Tab+mini KB, and occassionally something weird happens :). I was gonna conclude with, the Nexus is an awesome phone, just a little short on initial apps.

Well, the Nexus brand is synonymous with Android in its purest form. The apps of which you speak, are referred to here as bloatware, and are widely despised here. I would encourage you to check out the android market, you will be pleasantly surprised to find most of the apps you want there, and many if not all will be free. If you can't find one you are looking for, just ask, and we can help you find a good replacement, if not a better replacement. And congrats on your Nexus!

I forgot to mention another difference with this phone from Omnia 2. If I had the Onia 2 charged to 100% and put it on sleep, when I turned it back on it was still 100%. The Nexus eats a little battery on idle. I'm thinking its that flashing light at the bottom? If I'm at 100%, idling brings to to 97-96%. No big deal, but battery life is precious with these devices.

I'm just impressed that you stuck it out that long with the Omnia 2. I had one for three weeks and hated it so much that I paid full price for an OG Droid and never looked back. I still have my Omnia in it's box downstairs (mainly because I couldn't even sell it on ebay. lol) :p

Once I got the Galaxy Tab, I kinda fell in love with that and the Omnia 2 became just a phone :). I used it to make calls, check the weatherbug app, and as an emergency replacement to make it through the 2-3 days left on the Galaxy data meter before it resets to zero :D.

Speaking of Galaxy, I would say the Nexus' screen is about...60% of galaxy, nice.

I got the Omnia 2 the day it was released. I couldn't stand it longer than a week before I got the Droid. I avoided getting the droid only because it had a keyboard on it.

Could you go into a little more detail about why you hated omnia 2? It had its issues, but I didn't HATE it. It already came with a couple pages of Samsung widgets, 4-5 pages of microsoft apps. After shopping at the android store and Verizon apps store, I had tons of stuff on there. Verizon had a VCast kinda DVR app with tons of content from the ESPN Sports coverage for that day, to wildlife and documentaries. I got the SPB interface, with the 3D homepages. My contract was up and I wanted to stay current is all, meaning 4G. But by no means was it done because I didn't like omnia 2 I had a ball with it! Its still here, it'll find a home in my computer desk drawer :).

I was coming from the iPhone 3GS. Having to use a stylus I thought was rediculous since I had been using a good touchscreen for over 2 years. I thought Windows 6.5 was terrible for a phone, difficult to get it working the way I wanted to. To me the Omnia 2 just felt like the PDA I had in college but it made phone calls instead of a much more advanced smart phone like I wanted.

What I like is having OPTIONS, whether I need them or not :D! I like GOODIES!

You still have the options, but if they are not pre installed you have the option to only have the ones you want on your phone.

Not all installed apps run in the background and properly written apps will cache and not cause battery drain.

so, you'd rather have them imbedded on your phone, rather than just have the option to download them off the market if you want them?

some drain the battery and some don't. based on that, i don't want any of them imbedded in my phone. i don't root, nor do i want to have to root to rid myself of them.

Please don't put words in my mouth. I said nothing about a preference regarding embedded/pre-installed apps and the false dichotomy bolded above. I was simply commenting on the blanket statement and mis-information regarding the relationship between embedded apps and battery use.

To the OP, take some time to learn how the Android OS works. It will take you some time to break the bad habits that you had to develop while using WinMo. Misinformation and poor assumptions abound on this forum and you will need to develop a keen eye to spot the difference.

So, why dont you put down the thesarus and answer the simple question i posed in the "embolden dichotomy above"?
