Static - a few seconds - sporadically during some phone calls

For the past several weeks to a month, my verizon samsung droid charge has the bursts (very fast) of static during a minority of phone calls. It happens to cell and land lines. I hoped I would connect it to a battery, but I cannot, I factory reset my phone (for a different reason) but that did not help. It will happen a bunch of times in a day and then not again for days. Not sure if it has happened on bluetooth, but has happened on speaker and holding the phone. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have not reported to verizon yet.

Yes - thank you - I should.. of course it will act fine there.. The sad thing is that this phone has been a big nightmare since I've had it - and my husband's also.. however, since I had to do the factory reset the other week, several things (like staying on the verizon network) got better - but the static - which had started before then - didn't get better.. We have spent a fortune on these phones in order to keep enough batteries so they are charged, a network explander so they would work at our house - and the list goes on.. I wish I had gotten an i-Phone - but I like that I can have extra batteries and I hate the proprietary charging ports.. Anyway, since I know my phone will be fine at Verizon, I thought I would throw out the idea here - in case anyone else had it.. maybe I should have put it in a different forum.. but others I know with the same phone are not having this problem.

Have you noticed any correlation with the network expander? Does it happen both when you are connected and not connected? Is it possibly happening during switchover between the expander and VZW towers?

I haven't used an expander, but I can see where that introduced a new variable to the equation that may need to be explored.

Hi there - good questions.. Actually, it mostly happens where I work, which is in Verizon 4G territory.. although I think it's happened at home too - but definitely has happened when I am NOT connected to the network expander.. It may actually be "worse" with one of my 3 batteries than the others, but not limited to one. It will go days without doing it, and then it will happen a bunch - a bunch of short bursts of static that only I hear. I use my phone in the car a lot and it doesn't happen very much in the car - using a blue tooth headset.. I am happy to take it to a store - but it won't happen there. I will call Verizon this weekend, and I do have a 3rd level tech guy I can email (again) as they were having to help us a lot in the beginning because we were having so many problems.. I will keep your questions in mind, though, and try to pay more attention.. but I do know it mostly happens when I am in 4G.. I should turn the 4G off - back to CDMA and see if it goes away.. definitely something I can try.. before I reset my phone and it doesn't drop the network so much, I almost always kept it on CDMA.. At least it's something I can try.. Thanks again. I will report back if I figure anything out..

Hi there - more info - maybe.. I find the static happens more when I'm at work which is in a big city - strong 4g area.. So I turned my phone back to CDMA, but it happened again.. It doesn't happen for a while, but then it happened a bunch today. It does not seem to happen when I'm in my car using my bluetooth. I'm sure if I go to verizon it will be fine - but I should do it anyway.. It comes in strong bursts, the other person doesn't hear it.. and then it goes away for a while.. hmmmm.

Unfortunately I fear that this is a problem with ALL Charges (and all 4G phones on Verizon).

My wife and I had been experiencing the exact same problem with ours. Resets, etc... no change. I eventually contacted vzw who in turn contacted Samsung. Samsung's response was "It's a known issue but we have no idea what's causing it."

Verizon swapped our phones out for a different phone with no questions asked.

That being said, I've heard that the most recent update helps SIGNIFICANTLY with it!

Thank you both.. Kelmar -what phones did you get instead - new Charge's? I noticed you listed them as "retired!" Also - what recent update? I heard that ICS was out - but surely not for the Charge. Also - were you past the 30 days when vzw swapped your phone out? I think, (and I'll have to go back to some older emails) that my problem was before the solar flair. Thanks again. At least I'm not the only one with this issue - but my husband hasn't had it, nor has a guy I work with who also has this phone. We are all on the "stock" GB Build.

Ended up getting Razrs. The issue is still there but isn't ear shattering like it was on the Charge. We were significantly past our 14/30 day marks (probably around 5 months or so I think).

I'm not sure what the most recent build for the Charge is (want to say EP4). Perhaps the guys in the Charge section can provide better input.

Would you like this thread moved there? :)

How do you like the Razr's otherwise? Can you get through a day on one battery without having to charge? Did Verizon "hear" your phone have this problem? Mine is sporadic. Also - I guess I didn't know there was a "charge" area here.. I guess it all depends on if this is a "Charge" issue or not.. Are the Razr's on ICS now?

I like it. The sound quality of calls is simply amazing. Built quality is fantastic as well. I find that with the Charge I could leave 4G on all day and be fine. Can't do that with the razr though. :( I've been fine on 3g all day though.

Negative. Though to be fair I didn't go through their CS department. I went straight to their corporate office.

Like I said, I have it with the razr as well (though my wife doesn't have it now) but it's not nearly as loud or ear shattering.

Negative, we still on GB.

Glad to hear you like the Razr.. I heard that the battery life was better on the Razr than the Charge.. I can't make it through a day on the Charge even on 3G and I don't do a lot of txt or apps, talking etc.. some - but not a lot.. even charging from the car or the computer can't keep up with usage.. But I just saw a comparison that showed the Razr the best of all the 4G phones. Does Motorola have Swype? I would die w/out my swype! I think there are swype apps, not to be confused with Samsung's swype. Interesting that your wife stopped the static bursts but you still get them.. again today it happened at my job - in a strong 4G area (but my phone is on 3G).. but I had talked on a bluetooth in the car all the way to work - 20 minutes - and it didn't happen at all. Weird.. Have you read about this on any other forums? Thanks again.

Yes, I've read about this on other forums. Someone on XDA even found a way to reproduce it IIRC.

Yeap, Swype is included. :)

Odd that battery use can be so different, huh! Like I said, I've had no issues. My personal opinion would be to try to get the razr maxx if you think you'll have Assn issue with battery lasting. :D Unless I'm using my phone heavily I usually don't have an issue. Off charger at 6am and usually back on charger around 10 or 11pm with battery typically being anywhere from 15-35%.

So you got the Razr not the Razr Maxx? Maybe the Max wasn't out yet? and Maybe that's the one with the better battery life- but my husband mentioned that you can't change the battery on the Max - that's a problem for me b/c I don't trust these phones and I need to be able to carry/change and extra battery.. The verizon guy is having me run a logging app to see if they can see anything.

I did search and see this problem in other forums, including Verizon's.. It did seem to be mostly the Samsung phones.. They have some logs from my phone and are supposedly working on it. I heard you can't change the battery on the Razr phone.. that would be a problem for me.. I think I'll do my "time" on this and then go for an iPhone.. maybe there will be 4g by then. Anyway, I will post back if they find anything.. Thanks again..
