Root No Real ICS for us.

unfortunately we wont be seeing a native ICS build for our phones...we will get a stable ICS through 2nd init eventually...unfortunately our kernels will never get updated along with it...oh well...

the worst part is this wont keep me from buying a Moto device as my next phone...i much as i want cool mods and i support open source...i can't get passed the fact that Moto just makes the best phones out there...and a phone that works and performs well is just as important as one that is open...

I really feel bad for you Moto folks. I had the OG Droid and it was awesome. Then I had the Droid 2 and kept holding out hope for updates, Moto unlocking the bootloader, or someone cracking it. If Moto would would unlock the bootloaders or update their phones I would have a Maxx right now instead of a GNex.

Don't feel bad for me...my phone was a flagship device for longer than the GNex will be...the OGX has been the best device I've ever owned

I usually will not say something negative about a device. My prior post was sincere, but I felt I had to respond to your post.

Unfortunately, Moto's hardware quality, specs, and build may blow my GNex out of the water. I will absolutely agree with you on that. When you have a phone with an locked bootloader you will not realize how limited you are. Moto, in my opinion, builds the best devices, but I guarantee I will get more life out of my GNex due to the simple fact that I can get new ROMs and kernels without having to worry about the locked bootloader.

I totally respect your opinion, I love Moto, I hope I can return home if the Google purchase encourages them to unlock the bootloaders. And please, don't take my posts here as flaming, I really like Moto phones and have owned them since the mid 90's

My post was not a slight of the GNex in anyway...but my point was this...after the OGX...how long before VZW carried a phone that was clearly a better device in every way?...

Now think...will the GNex have the same amount of time before VZW has a phone that trumps it?....some would argue the RAZR MAXX already does...

Everyone's opinion will always be different on each subject we face, we can all agree android is a great OS, and that motor devices are superior, regardless of the boot loader, it is a superior device, the gnex is obviously the Google flagship device, and will stay that way til next year, and will be updated just as the rest have. I say have no fear, android is always a great thing to have, and who knows, maybe with the buyout of motor, if we plea to Google they may release the keys to the Porsche!

No phone on Verizon can trump the Galaxy Nexus, because it has the ace in the hole: stock ICS.

but we have not seen what the OEMs have in store for ICS...

say what you want...but GingerBlur was a MUCH more polished OS than stock Gingerbread...

My point wasn't really about the GNex being the best phone.

I understand...but my point was that the OGX was the best device on VZW for a long long time...this will not be the case for the GNex...

But we have seen what HTC & Samsung have in store for ICS; basically updated versions of Sense & Touchwiz. They don't want to change their skins too much because they may risk alienating their fans. Motorola may be different because they just got bought by Google.

Lol i was expecting like maybe 3 replies, but nice to see some activity here :)

I do agree with Met that the Nexus probably will not be the top phone at Verizon as long as the Dx was. If Google would change Moto stance on Bootloaders and we could get a 4G phone made by Moto with full root and rom capacities I would bet it would be a large step up even using the same Chips and battery as the Gnex. I bought the gf a Gnex for V-Day, while i like playing with it the itch to root and rom really has not taken hold, so i feel like I could be happy with just basic root function on my future phone.

And maybe Moto will surprise us with a very close to stock ICS phone in the coming future.

+1 The Tegra 3 phones are starting to line up. So far, there's an HTC and an LG (which is supposed to have very light modifications to ICS...probably just a couple apps/widgets). Then there's the Intel-based Motorola phone that looks pretty good. We'll see how well that performs. Then there's the Samsungs with the Exynos chips...

Basically, the GNex is going to be thoroughly out-spec'd pretty soon.

The Milestone X is the closest phone to our DX's and ICS is in the planning stages for that phone. So if we can get lucky and the source is put out there some time after it's release, our devs MAY be able to get real ICS on our DX's WITH a working camera. I'm not gonna hold my breath for it but oh wouldn't it be nice?

this was beginning to look like a good post until I got to the ever so popular "specs." We should all know by now specs mean nothing if the software doesn't work well. ANYONE...and I mean ANYONE who says the Razr out performs the galaxy nexus is obviously corrupted by the carrier salesman. I played with both and you can instantly notice the advantage of having a vanilla build vs skins.

The nexus will outlast any phone that gets launched in the next 6 months...and thats not including the 2 months its already been out. Without quad core nothing comes close, and even so my single core still shits on anyone who has a skinned dual core. Opinions are always great, but if you follow trends then you would know that nothing really compared to the original nexus until a year later when people wanted bigger screens. Sooooo until smart phones actually start lasting 2 days (no way will a razr last 2 days) the gnex will be an amazing phone...anyone who says otherwise is wrong...plain and simple

Take into consideration I've used devices from the original g1...I didn't jump on the ship when verizon starting screaming DROID!!!!!!! in my face...I have experience in dual core, tablets, and plenty of devices to know that anyone who says a skinned phone is better is just not educated enough.

you are actually wrong on certain aspects, and right on certain aspects

yes vanilla is always perferred by developers, and users like us.

however
motoblur
touchwiz
and senseui
provide some very great features that people will argue with you about, no one is right, and no one is wrong when it comes to which is better. its all user preference, if someone thinks blur is better than vanilla, let them think that, as it is their choice, that is why android is all about choices, you have a choice between a vanilla build, or a skinned build, thats what android provides, where as apple provides just one type... theirs..

so regardless no one is right or wrong in this case. user preference determines everything

That would make sense if you were comparing vanilla GB to skinned GB on the same hardware and not vanilla ICS vs skinned GB on different hardware.

Uhhh...quad cores are much closer than six months out.
Sooooo until smart phones actually start lasting 2 days (no way will a razr last 2 days)
The RAZR MAXX does.
anyone who says otherwise is wrong...plain and simple
That's a bold statement.

I guess that depends on your definition of "better"...

So the Milestone X and the DX use different kernels? I always figured they'd be the same.

it doesn't really matter if they use different kernels or not...the problem is that when ICS is pushed to the Milestone, it will almost certainly have a new kernel included in the update...we MAY be able to flash the ICS update, but the new kernel would be impossible because of our locked bootloader...

this was beginning to look like a good post until I got to the ever so popular "specs." We should all know by now specs mean nothing if the software doesn't work well.
this is true, but the GNex is still going to be outclasses easily...soon...

ANYONE...and I mean ANYONE who says the Razr out performs the galaxy nexus is obviously corrupted by the carrier salesman. I played with both and you can instantly notice the advantage of having a vanilla build vs skins.
might hold some water if you were not comparing Vanilla ICS to GingerBlur...

yes skins can often introduce a little bit of performance hit, but there is no denying that the skins often present a much more polished experience...ICS is a little different because Google took some real care in designing the UI...but on Froyo and Gingerbread there was no comparison visually between Vanilla and Skinned...

The nexus will outlast any phone that gets launched in the next 6 months...and thats not including the 2 months its already been out.
outlast in the sense that it will be supported? i guess so, but not because it performs better, simply because its completely open...

Without quad core nothing comes close, and even so my single core still shits on anyone who has a skinned dual core.

please...stop lying to yourself...

Opinions are always great, but if you follow trends then you would know that nothing really compared to the original nexus until a year later when people wanted bigger screens.
right, it got outclassed by SPECS lol...the DX was VZW's flagship device for a good year as well...whats your point?

Sooooo until smart phones actually start lasting 2 days (no way will a razr last 2 days)
hellloooooo RAZR MAXX lol...it already lasts that long...

the gnex will be an amazing phone...anyone who says otherwise is wrong...plain and simple
never said the GNex was not an amazing phone...just that IMO...the MAXX is the better piece of hardware...

Take into consideration I've used devices from the original g1...I didn't jump on the ship when verizon starting screaming DROID!!!!!!! in my face...I have experience in dual core, tablets, and plenty of devices to know that anyone who says a skinned phone is better is just not educated enough.
im educated plenty my friend, and its rather disrespectful and ignorant to assume your opinions are factual...the MAXX has the better hardware...period...and we shall see how it performs when it eventually gets its ICS update...

Moto has improved Blur with every update and i see no reason why they wont again with ICS...Blur was so much improved with Gingerbread that it completely won over some of the most hardcore anti-blur people out there...heck Vanilla Gingerbread doesnt even have speed dial!! (WHAT!?)

you are actually wrong on certain aspects, and right on certain aspects

yes vanilla is always perferred by developers, and users like us.

+1000

truly i wish at the end of the day Moto would unlock their bootloaders so that people would have access to such great hardware and the freedom to install whatever they wanted on the OS front...

i would put money on my next statement...RAZR MAXX vs GNex...both with unlockable bootloaders...i know exactly which phone the majority of devs would be using...and its not made by Samsung...

this is pretty much spot on, however i must use the updates standpoint

moto has been pretty good about updates, and google is just beast when it comes to updates.

however unlocked bootloaders

maxx will win hands down with dev support
but i would have to bet that devs would develop for both.

it would be easy to assume anything with both being unlocked...

problem is we cant see it yet :( but we can always have faith. just not in moto haha.

but my personal opinion moto would have more support. not that much more, but it would have more
