Infuse and Gingerbread update

Ok I am no fan boy of any phone but this upgrade is ridiculous, I tried the upgrade but got the unregistered phone thing...so I backreved the phone to the original froyo version. So now my phone is recognized. I think, Great! I am now 2 days into the process. So I start Kies Mini.....and it says. "NO UPDATE AVAILABLE". WTF! I tried all the "fixes" still it says my phone needs no update. OK now I am thinking to myself....should have bought the windows phone or the IPhone. This is my wife's phone who has a low tolerance for techie bs. She thinks it should just work..rightfully so. So she still has an Infuse that wireless and gps suck and are pretty much useless. Guess I should have bought the right phone huh?

Anybody know if Samsung's servers are clogged and maybe that is what it won't give me the update?

:(

This is what I was told by samsung on the phone this afternoon. Samsung found a problem with GB and pulled it from the server. It doesn't matter whether you have the 5 or the 1 version. They are looking to have it fixed by Fri. The problem I find with this is that I recall reading of people upgrading this weekend which would not be possible if GB was pulled.

The update that chinefoo posted on this thread was written by me on the ATT forums this has worked for hundreds of people on that site, ATT is running with and using in the floor support groups, and social media, as Samsung has not given them anything to go off of.

chinefoo please give credit where credit is due.

Hello everyone,

I have seen my other post from the ATT forum post here and it work so here are the new instructions

I too had the problem that everyone is having with Kies mini saying my phone is unregistered and Samsung support not doing a thing to fix the issue., but I found a last night and it does not require gtg unbrick to be use or your phone to be rooted or any of the like. If you follow these steps you should be good, if you have problem plenty of us on this thread an help you out.

Here is what I did:

1.Download the .md5 file from here http://davidstarenterprises.net/I997UCKL2-Homebinary.tar.md5 (this is the same file that jvanlew at XDA Devoplers found) I just made another download so it does not take up his bandwidth he gets all the credit for this find. This file has been captured from Kies mini so it is the official version of Gingerbread. Download the file it will be called I997UCKL2-Homebinary.tar.md5 and save it where you can find it again like your the desktop where all your icons are this will take some time about 10 to 20 mins depending on your Internet speed.

If you have a Mac, then I guess that you could unzip it and flash it thru heimdall, not sure of how to do this as I don't have a mac, so if someone wants to try this and post how to do it with a mac great.

2. Next Download and save Odin3 1.7 from here Anti Virus Software - David Star Enterprises v1.7.exe and save it to your desktop this will be a quick download. Open Odin3 v1.7 up. Don't click anything in Odin till that md5 file is done downloading.

3, When the .md5 file is done downloading it will be called I997UCKL2-Homebinary.tar.md5

4. In Odin click PDA it will pop open a window browse to your desktop or where ever you save the file select it and click open.

5. Do not click anything else in Odin leave everything the way it is.

6. Place phone in download mode here is how you do this:
Connect the usb cable that came with the infuse into your computer usb ports does not matter which ones you use.
Power down the phone then remove the battery, put the battery back in, you will need two hands for this press and hold both volume buttons with your thumb, then plug in the USB cable that came with the phone in to the bottom of the phone.
You will get a message on your screen that says Warning!!!
A Custom OS can cause critical problems......
a. Press Volume up to continue
b. The screen will change to a yellow Triangle that says do not turn off Target!!!!
c. Your phone is now in download mode.
You will see the device connected in ODIN, and it should have the second row of box filled in as such 0:[COMxxx] your com port will change mine goes between 3 and 4 you may get com1 as long as it is in there that is all you need, it will be in yellow.
Hit the Start button in Odin to begin the upgrade process the box above the com box will have stuff in it now not a whole lot to read there.
In Odin there is box that says messages it should have the following
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Removed!!
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> I997UCKL2-Homebinary.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Successfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 1 / failed 0)
You also see a progress bar on the phone in blue if not then the update is not taking and you may get this
<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Removed!!
<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> I997UCKL2-Homebinary.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Successfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)

8 If you get this and no progress bar start over by removing the battery and the usb cable and try again to put the phone in to download mode.

9. Once the process completes, the phone will reboot on its own

10. The phone will think on the ATT splash screen for awhile about 2-3 min that is normal with any update on a phone

11. Welcome to Gingerbread. you can verify this by seeing the icons at the top in the tray will be smaller (i.e battery, signal, network,)
a. And by going to menu-> About Phone ->
Firmware version will say 2.3.6(GB)
Baseband Version will be I997UCKL2
Kernel version will be 2.6.35.7-I997UCKL2-CL806505
Build Number will be Gingerbread.UCKL2

If you brick your phone you didn't follow the instructions.

Thanks for making the download and write up! I couldn't get the download to go from the original over at XDA. My wife's Infuse may join the GB world if I can convince her to let me do a Factory reset on her phone (to prevent froyo hangover) LOL! Thanks again.

Not sure if this is any new info or not but I did a chat with Samsung regarding the unregistered message. They said the problem lied in kies mini so the update was put on hold. They will roll out an update to kies mini and then the update should be available. I'll believe it when it happens.

EDIT: Update Now it says...

Firmware version : Latest version
Firmware upgrade: 12/02/09

A step in the right direction I suppose. Better than just getting product unregistered.

I never could get the touchscreen to work right even with multiple wipes, etc...it was really starting to wear on me. Since it is obvious the official update will be LOOOOONG in coming, I returned to stock (GTG) Froyo, rooted w/ SuperOneClick, Installed 3E Recovery and ClockWorkMod and then installed the custom 2.3.6 Rom Zeus v6. It took about 1-1/2 hours including the time to put back all of my apps & settings.

So far (1-day) it ROCKS! No screen lag and has all of the things I liked about Gingerbread on the Infuse: Improved GPS & battery life, etc.

Here's the instructions: [ROM][UCKL2][2.3.6]ALL HAIL *Z*E*U*S*The Collective[3/5/12]Now with 8 Lockscreens! - xda-developers

Thanks...I found that out AFTER I put everything back manually and posted the above. However, it should be noted that users will have to put back all of their apps and passwords/data after the reset.

I looked up the reset info because, I realized I was having the trouble lots of others are experiencing: the touch screen is very unresponsive after the update. I did the factory reset and it didn't help. However, I did not reformat the internal SD card since I would have lost lots of data that I need to back up first. I'm not looking forward to having to put back all of my apps a THIRD time, but hopefully after the next reset, I will have a fully-functional Infuse.

This is the crappiest upgrade I've ever had to do outside of Windows OS.

If anyone has any procedure to fix the unresponsive touchscreen, I'm all ears!

I just bought an Infuse from ATT and it should be on my doorstep today. I hate to ask because i think i already know the answer. Will my Infuse already have GB on it or am i gonna have to go thru all the trouble everyone is having?

skeeter

It will be Froyo. Gingerbread has not been officially released for the Infuse 4G. The assumption is that it is almost ready, but at this point, no one knows for sure exactly when the Gingerbread official update will roll out. If you really want Gingerbread, you can try flashing custom ROMs that use the leaked UCLB3 Gingerbread build (not official), or stock UCLB3. It's not official and still not completely finished, but on the whole, is quite stable.

I'm just curious, why did you decide to go with the Infuse? Was it the pricing?

If you don't mind paying $99, I'd recommend that you go with the AT&T Galaxy SII (you can return your new Infuse within 30 days). It's a much better phone overall, and it is going to get Ice Cream Sandwich soon (whereas the Infuse will most likely never get it). I've had both (used the Infuse for almost a year and recently switched to SII) and the day to day experience has been vastly different. Way less bugs, a lot more buttery smooth, well-done overall user experience.

I normally would not go this far out of my way to recommend anyone to return a phone and get another one, but really, if you're already asking this kind of a question about the Gingerbread update on the Infuse, I really think you will save a lot of heartache if you just pay a bit more and go with the Galaxy SII.

If you really want a 4.5" screen, then there's also the Galaxy SII Skyrocket (but that's a bit more pricey). At this point, the LTE doesn't really matter though, unless you live in an area where LTE is covered.

Kies is telling me the same thing, that My phone is unregistered. I just registered the phone on the samsung website about 30 minutes ago, how long should I wait? Some users seem to not have this problem, they are already using gingerbread. Then some are not, I am just really confused.

Unlike most I am really wanting gingerbread because I have been dealing with a bug, I made a thread on it, and I am hoping GB will fix it. Also, if GB does not fix it I would be willing to try a factory reset, but should I do this before or after installing GB? assuming I figure out how.

I considered using a custom ROM but I would really like to stay away from that stuff.

Any advice?

Kies shouldn't work. Samsung pulled that update. It was never meant to be the official Gingerbread, it just got accidentally leaked and then somewhere down the line, some employee accidentally turned on the switch. They thought it would be safe because no one officially announced it, and then lo and behold, some "inside info" AT&T rep accidentally spills the beans, and now, voila, you have the current clusterf*ck situation we have right now.

If you want Gingerbread, use Heimdall One Click for UCLB3. That's stock and leaked by Samsung. However, it's not completely finished. There are little things missing here and there (like battery indicator color always being green), but it's a solid build overall.

Kies worked for a few weeks, but it should have never worked in the first place. Samsung put the brakes on it. Once again, I will repeat this over and over again, but THERE IS NO OFFICIAL GINGERBREAD YET. Everyone just got very confused (including one AT&T rep). UCLB3 is the latest LEAK (not official), and the one everyone tried to get through Kies a few months ago was definitely unfinished (lots of bugs, bad touchscreen issues, etc.)

ok, I can wait a little longer in hopes of the official one being released. But what about my device being unregistered? I bought it in June 2011 and I just registered it this morning, how can I fix kie mini not seeing my device as registered?

Also, is there an ETA for the official GB update?

If you register it on the Samsung website, it takes a few hours for it to show on Kies. However, I don't know if that changed after Samsung removed the UCKL2 (what everyone thought was the official release) from working on Kies.

There is no ETA for the official Gingerbread release. Some people are saying they think it's coming soon, but I've heard that said so so so many times (I myself often said it too). I think at this point, no one really knows until it actually comes out.

So I have read through a lot of the posts here and see a lot of suggestions. I recently (3 days ago) found out about the update to GB and saw it was pulled. I have had my Infuse for almost a year. What would be the best suggestions at this stage of what I should do. I am not able to return it at this stage and not quite in the spot to upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

Use it as is on stock Froyo, flash the Heimdall One Click UCLB3 Gingerbread, or flash a custom ROM. Each one has different bugs and issues, so if you can't decide, try them all out and see which one makes you the least upset.

Or just buy a Galaxy SII :p (half joking).

Ok So I went to update my phone on the samsung website via kies mini- when I connect my phone and click update it says sgh-i997 could not be upgraded..1 detach and reattach the phones battery reboot the phone and try the update again,

I did this 100 times and nothing.!! Helpppp

Give up on it.... it sucks. Ics will be released anytime now (provided by jt on xda), might as well learn to root and change roms, or else you will get nowhere.

I use to have the samsung galaxy precedent- and then went to AT&T and got the infuse- what a pain in the ass! I really didnt want to root this phone- because of the warranty etc-- I rooted my last phone but when I had to return it - it was a pain because there is no way to Un-root once you do it. but now I am use to gingerbread and I like it so much better so if that is the only option I guess I will just have to do it!- I get a new infuse on wed because my current infuse that I have had for 2 months is acting stupid- shuts off by itself and reboots- says the sim card isnt in freezes wont charge etc- so they are mailing me a new phone- so When I get that one I will try kies mini again- if it doesnt work then I will root

Yeah it does. A lot of people are having issues with it such as lagginess. No thanks. I tried it for a couple hours and decided it isn't worth it. Had random reboots and lags. I'm staying with 2.2.1 100% stock which runs perfectly.

Right after i experinced bad gingerbread, i flashed CM7 for two reasons 1. Knew it ran great and fine and 2. CM9 was coming. Makes it a little bit easier, it will probably just be one flash instead of two. Lol i was on 2.2.1 for months on my bad phone, and i hated it so much! Being on cm7, wow makes it run better then my friends tmobile gs2. Battery could be better... but whatever.
