w/Beats Headphones?

I have to give mine back after Easter. Gone are the days where you get to review a phone over a long period of time, or even get to keep the phone! There are some exceptions, but generally it's a very quick turnaround these days.

I prefer to wait a bit to do a review, so I've had a good chance to play with it. It does mean losing a bit of web traffic but that's still the way I think it should be. People publishing a review within 2-3 hours aren't helping the consumer that may be paying hundreds of pounds to buy one, or signing up to a 2 year contract!

THANK YOU!!

We all know that phones come out of the box with every power hogging widget possible set to go.

They come in demo mode, and have to be trimmed back.

I start every new phone off with a factory data reset. Kill it all off, and configure for my use, and then build up.

Those instant reviews only explore the sizzle, not the steak.

Good on ya, mate! :)

Sums it up Dan, aye.

However, the Beats notification appears when you use the standard out of the box earphones. They are the uncomfiest things known to man though.

yea i was fully using the htc earphones today and freaking thing wont stay in my ear since it seems to be make a little larger than the normal generic earbuds.. or i just have smaller ear holes.. lol but my other ear buds are ok so how do you explain?!

anyway it kept falling out of my ear its so annoying!

although the quality seems to be quite good but this form factor is fail

im guessing if you put one of those foamy things you sometimes get in ipod boxes it will help it stay it ? also , i remember i saw the wire of the 'phones being flat - how are they are getting tangled?

I have been using a One X for about 3 days...about the Beats Audio with other headphones, I believe it should work, in a sense. I believe the way that Beats Audio works is basically is an EQ boost similar to what "Loudness" used to be on some older devices. I am not sure if there is some DSP involved, but I doubt it.

But in the settings menu for sound, you will see the Sound Enhancer menu when you have anything plugged into the headphone jack.

Here, you can select Beats Audio in addition to other presets such as Bass Boost, Classical, Vocal, Treble Boost, Live, Dance, Warmth, and Sweetener.

At the top of the page however, you can specify your headset to be Beats iBeats, Solo, Pro, Studio, or Other...I assume that this means you are using another brand of headphones.

It doesn't matter in a sense - it's a matter of taste. As I type this, I have Sennheiser PX200's plugged in and trying the different presets. As it turns out, the Beats iBeats preset seems to give me the best sound closest to what I want.

MAYBE HTC did "tune" the presets to work for the specific Beats headphones, so that's why there is an advantage there versus a generic profile. But it would be incorrect to say that Beats Audio does not "work" unless you have Beats headphones. Just think of it as an EQ setting.

On more note on this: SOME programs to take advantage of Beats Audio - you can hear the difference when you turn it on/off, like TuneIn Radio. However, with Double Twist, there was no effect...I guess the program has to be written to tap into the EQ settings of the Sound Settings page. Maybe Double Twist doesn't do this as it has it's own EQ settings page and didn't want to double up this process. So no Beats Audio for DoubleTwist.

Hope that helps

I saw a couple of reports in reveiws that the beats audio was supposed to "enhance" the sound when played through anything. ie car stereo, speaker set, headphones.
Is this not the case or is it a setting adjustment.
Not really bothered about the beats addition, just another gimmick for me, along with all the bass boost stuff from the 80's and 90's

Yep! I'm pretty sure the beats audio S/W needs beats H/W (or vice versa) to work properly. :)

Beats is just software preset, you can disable it and use advanced Equalizer like found in some better audio apps. Beats headphones are simply branded headphones, they are probably recognized by phones based on used impedance or something else, but still they are regular headphones with nothing extra in them, simply rebranded and priced accordingly.

after getting my one x yesteday and testing the beats audio eq settings with my Sennhieser hd598's, I must say I am very impressed with the beats software.

I did a direct comparrison with several songs comparing the beats audio settings to the dolby mobile setting son my desire HD and the beats software is significantly better.
Much more detailed sound and it just sounds better in my opinion compared to the dolby preset.

Still not a massive fan of their headphones but I can't fault the software. Best preset feature Ive used on a phone to date.

My housemate has invested in a set of beats studio pro's so when they turn up Im going to see if pairing the headphones with the sowtware to match makes any noticable difference. Should be an interesting test.

I have it on my phone and Im looking for ways to permanently disable it LOL
On my headphones (Hippo Variable Bass) it doesnt do anything I could notice. I still prefer to use quality equalizer to bump up 30-60Hz range and leave the rest untouched.
I also heard it sometimes cripples quality when disabled to fool people into thinking its doing great miracle stuff.

How much do they cost? Hope they're not one of the pricier ones, the $600 ones offer about the same sound quality as anyone elses $200 sets. If you've not listened to a $200 headset before they'll still sound quite 'wow', but if then you listen to say a Grado S60i/325i/Senn HD25-I II/Audio Technica A900 the wow feelings will quickly subside to "I got ripped off" (unless you only listen to hip-hop and club music, in which case you might still be in love). They will look really nice though, there is always that.

Never been entirely sure about whether there is any point in Dolby for audio on phones (or in general for that matter). Hardly any CDs are actually specifically made for Dolby, and for rips of regular CDs therefore it won't particularly add any benefit (and presumably may well detriment the sound, which has tended to be my experience when I've tried it on phones). Even for rips of dolby CDs there really isn't much point as far as I can see, since the soundstage present in most headphones drivable from a portable source like a phone won't reproduce anything like playback via speakers.

If they're genuine then that's a good deal, even though they are Beats :)

Turned up yesterday and they are genuine.
Can't really complain for that price. didn't get a chance to borrow them to test with my phone as we had no usable AAA batteries in the house, apart from the ones that were nicked out of the tv remote which died in about 5 mins as they were marginal anyway...

Will test later and let you guys know where he got them from incase anyone want to snap up a pair.
