Root How to overclock already rooted LGP-500

Hey guys. I am new to android! ) but I already figure out how to root my LG P-500 with "gingerbreak" (previously I upgrade the OS to Gingerbread 2.3.3 from LG). So I have rooted android 2.3.3! Then I decided to overclock my CPU (which suppose to be 600 MHz), but could not get it upper then 600MHz, so I read some threads and I understood that I need to change the ROM or something like that... So I didn't really understood how to do it.
Could anybody pleas tell me the exact steps for what I need to do in order to ba able to overclock my CPU.

There must be a million tutorials throughout the web, including some good ones in this site. Read through them.

I'll outline the basic steps:
1. Root
2. Install custom recovery
3. Flash a custom kernel or ROM.
You may or may not need to flash a different baseband depending on which ROm you're flashing and which version of android you are currently on.

I have read many tutorials regarding this problem, nut I can't understand what does it mean to install "custom recovery"?? I tried to follow the tutorial, where it is saying to copy the "custom recovery" to the root of the sd card, turn off the phone and then hold down the HOME+VOLUME DOWN+POWER ON, and it should boot to some kind of mode where I am suppose to find that archive, install from it !!! ok BUT when I do all this, my phone is doing heard reset!!! and booting normally, instead of booting it the place which is described in a tutorial !!!
Could you pleas explain me at least the 2-nd step? what should I do and how, the rest I'll figure out by myself.
I have Gingerbread 2.3.3 (upgraded from LG), rotted!!! (root is working 100%).

I did a google search and I wasn't able to find many of the guides (including the one I used to flash my recovery). I still remember how I did it, so I'll write a tutorial, but I have exams now, so it may take a week or more. In the mean time, do not flash a custom recovery using ROM manager. That method is flawed and you risk bricking your phone. I bricked my phone when I tried that method (twice).
