Help OS battery usage

First off, a little background:

I'm quite technical when it comes to PC's, used Windows and Linux, used the BIOS for various things, overclocked, programmed etc etc etc. However, when it comes to phones I've never been so inclined. I simply used what I could afford. However, a few days ago I bought the samsung galaxy note as I wanted a smartPhone, because I thought it would come in useful when I'm out and about and as I realised I wasn't making as much use out of my phone as I wanted simply because it was laggy and couldn't do such things. I had no knowledge of smart phones other than what I'd gained when looking for which one to buy, and this is why my knowledge is limited.

My phones running smoothly and I get 3.8k on quadrant without overclocking, however, I checked today and whereas before my Android OS battery usage was on 7%, it is now on 63%. Surely this should not be so? The battery has drained by about 30% even whilst locked / on standby. How should I fix this?

I know risks of rooting my phone and changing the ROM, but I don't know how likely that is to happen. Is it worth rooting if the phone will be getting ICS soon anyway? The only reason I would want to root the phone would be for smoother running / faster running and better battery usage, as I don't mind anything else with the phone at the moment - so is it worth taking the risk? Also bear in mind that I have no experience with smart phones, let alone androids (believe it or not I'd never even used an iPhone), however I do have knowledge of flashing BIOS's etc etc.

Any help?
Thank you

You dont need to root your phone achieve what you want, my GNote is stock, has super battery life, hitting 2 days with heavy use, UI is smooth and stable. Root can and does bring benefits, if you have to ask if you need it, you likely dont.

Two of my colleagues and myself were comparing our GNote`s and all three were significantly different, in look feel and battery life, all three phones are the same stock OS, same country of purchase, no root, only difference what was loaded on the phones and the setup. I run all animation, live wallpaper and had the highest usage of the three yet I also have the longest run time on battery, so you see it`s all in the set up of the phone, monitoring what apps are power hungry, smart use of WiFi, network data, screen brightness, screen timeout,

My iPhone 4 would just about got through the day, so for me the GNote is a big improvement and my usage has increased.

Two days of heavy use?! How is that possible?

hmm alright. It's better battery usage today since it's been on charge and restarted. I also got 4k on quadrant today. So I guess rooting isn't needed :) However, I have 2 more unrelated questions:

1) Can anyone recommend a good, matte, anti-glare, anti-smudge screen protector for my note that can be delivered to the UK?

2) When will ICS be coming to the note in the UK?

By using what you need to use, when you need to use it, by not having endless apps polling for unnecessary data continuously. When I want the GNote to work I want it to be fast and efficient. My phone is a business tool if I want to play games etc I have a Galaxy Tab 7.7, typical usage of the GNote is calls, web, some productivity apps, GPS, ocasional game, Bluetooth, music (I have a long commute 1-1/2 - 2 hours) I can get two days of use with repeatability, although mostly I charge each day as it makes no sense to get caught short & it`s better for the battery.

International version, stock, no root, no problems :)
