Right there, you are being half informed... misinformed, depending on your phone. The one-click methods only work on Skyrockets that are still running Gingerbread version 2.3.5. If yours has been updated to 2.3.6, you will need to look at more complicated methods. Like I said... a LOT of reading to do. A "supposedly" "competent" "developer," who I happen to think is just a jackass, toasted his phone rooting and ROMing things a day or two ago.
If everything doesn't go exactly as planned... that includes the remote possibility of power outages during the sometimes lengthy procedures, you can end up "soft-bricked", which will send you scurrying around trying to find a piece of hardware called a "jig" that plugs into the phone's USB port to get it in some sort of state that you may be able to restore it... or you could end up "hard-bricked," which means you are now the proud owner of an $800 paperweight.
Read ALL the disclaimers well. They are usually written better than the instructions for doing whatever it is you may want to do.
