Hi everyone,

I bought a Wildfire S this weekend and i've tried to root it. However, when I installed and opened the ROM manager app (v5.0.0.7), a window popped up that said:

"You must root your phone for ROM manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su". Use Google Search on your computer to find instruction to root your phone."

So I've been googling for some days now, but haven't found a working solution yet. So I thought I might need some help.
I think it would be wise to first note all the information I can get about the phone. At hbooting it says:

*** UNLOCKED ***
MARVEL PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.09.0099
MICROP-0451
RADIO-7.57.39.10M
Feb 8 2012, 18:29:31

then at software information it says:

Android version: 2.3.5
HTC Sense version: 2.1
Software number: 2.26.161.1
Kernel version: 2.6.35.10-g696f19b htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Baseband version: 47.23e.35.3038H_7.57.39.10M

And under the battery it says:

PG76100 5VDC===1A
FCC ID : NM8PG76100

It has a vodafone prepay (netherlands)

I started the day before yesterday by executing RUU's from htcdev.com, but none of them worked. With most RUU's I got the 190 error, but with "HTC EU" I got an 191 error, saying that my ROM was not supported and I had to wait for its RUU to come. I eventually proceeded with the next steps of unlocking the bootloader on htcdev.com, and in fact everything went as they described it. My phone gave a screen that asked if I wanted to onlock it, I choosed yes, and my phone rebooted with the basic skin, etc.
After that I downloaded HTC Super Tool v3. I ran it, did the sergRush Prep, after that the Attempt Perm Root (all while the phone was on and on Disk Drive). The latter gave the following text:

Loading root script......
pushing BusyBox...
changing permissions...
mount: permission denied <are your root?>
/system/xbin/busybox: cannot open for write: Read-only file system
Unable to chmod /system/xbin/busybox: No such file or directory
Unable to chmod /system/xbin/busybox: No such file or directory
/system/xbin/busybox: not found

Unable to chmod /system/bin/su: No such file or directory

Pushing Superuser.apk

And then it screamed ROOTED with flashy colours at me. Then I rebooted and ROM manager still gave me that message. Does it mean that system/bin/su and system/xbin/su don

your bootloader is already unlocked, so no need to go through the htcdev procedure.

download this

http://dottech.org/downloads/adb_fastboot_and_other_tools.zip

and extract the contents to the root of your pc's hard drive

download this

recovery(custom).img

and put it into this same directory (i.e. C:\Android\reovery(custom).img)

download this

root.zip

and put it on the root of your phone's sd card

turn off the phone

turn on by pressing voliume down and power buttons simultanously.

this will boot the phone into bootloader mode.

from here, choose the option "fastboot".

connect the phone to your pc via usb, it will change to say "fastboot usb".

goto a command prompt on your pc

type cd\ to get back to root directory

type cd Android

at C:\Android\ promt

type the following command

fastboot flash recovery recovery(custom).img

wait while it installs custom recovery, it will say on the command prompt when it's done, and you can also check progress on the top right corner of the screen on your phone.

once complete, choose bootloader on the phone's menu (you can disconnect usb now by the way).

choose option "recovery"

this will boot cwm recovery 2.0.5.8

here choose the option "flash .zip from sd card"

choose the root.zip and choose "yes"

wait while it installs, then choose "reboot system now"

your phone is now rooted :)

enjoy!

Hey guys,

Unfortunately there seems to be problems with recovery with some phones.
This is what I know so far.

If going to recovery gets you black screen:
Recovery might not be showing on your screen but it is actually working. You can use youtube as a guide and count the steps to flash roms/make nandroid backups.

If going to recovery gets you the with HTC logo:
Unfortunately, recovery is not working. And there is no solution at the moment. People have no idea why it's not working but some seem to be working on finding a solution....So best of luck!
