Verizon Tech support told me every 3-4 days to do a "Soft Reset." Different than turning Phone off & restarting.

To soft reset your phone:

Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons together for 10 seconds and the phone should go black & then display the Red "M" logo.

Wait about 10 seconds and then press and hold the Power button again to restart.

So I guess this begs the question--what does a soft reset do? If it's rebooting the phone, then it's the same as turning it off and then turning it on. I'm not trying to be a jerk here, I would really like to know what it does...

On a side note, I like to clear my memory cache every couple of days. It involves restarting the phone and booting into the recovery menu.

If your interested:

- Hold the power button until you get the "phone options" menu and then choose "power off."
- With the phone powered off, while pressing and holding the voume up and down buttons at the same time, press and hold the power button until the phone starts and then release all three buttons.

You're now in the "Boot Mode Selection Menu"
- Press the volume "down" button once to move the selection to "recovery"
- Press the volume up button once to select "recovery"

The phone will now boot into recovery mode. You should first see the Moto logo followed by a picture of a droid.

- Press and hold the voume up and down buttons at the same time.

Your now in the recovery menu. The volume up/down buttons move the selection and the power button makes the selection.

- Move the selection to "Wipe cache partition" and then press the "power button." Your phone will now clear the memory cache.
- When the menu pops back up, it should already be on "reboot system now." Press the "power" button to reboot the phone.

That's it! Long instructions, but a handy thing to know...

No other replies from anyone?

I had asked the tech support guy who told me to do this SR every 3-4 days: "Is that different from just powering off & then on?" He said: "Yes it is different."

I did some searches & now wonder if he was incorrect. That, in fact, a SR is the same as a simple reboot, as you asked.

Maybe the SR is to be used if the phone locks up & you can't power off as normal & certainly cannot pull the battery?

I am now thinking that you should simply power off & then on your phone every few days & NOT do a soft reset unless you are unable to power off.

In the Help app on the phone I saw the soft reset procedure referred to as a forced reboot. So, I think the tech who told me to do the soft reset was simply wrong.

Well, for the first time, my Maxx went to a black screen and would not power on when pressing the power button!!! I hate this! I held the power button for 10 seconds...nothing. Then I held the power button and the volume down and it boot up.

Why are these issues still present in Android??? I am just making an observation here, but my daughter got the iphone 4 from her LG Ally and she is in love: no lag, no freezes, no weird restarts, etc. It is frustrating that I keep preaching Android and I thought the Maxx was clear of all those maladies, but lately I am experiencing lag, unresponisveness, and today this.... I know Android is not exactly Linux, but it is based on it. My desktop and laptops running Ubuntu are flawless; will beat any Win machine and dare I say Macs as well, any day. But, Android seems to still had some issues???

By the way, a soft reset is nothing more than re-starting the phone (reboot).
Here's the info on that:

First off, Hello fellow Washingtonian...lol

When you do this does what info does it erase? Will I have to re-install anything?

If it helps, then oh well. But my take is that it shoudl not be the case. Again, I am no expert, but if memory was optimized, why do we have the need to do this? I can only based it on me running Linux on several machines. I know, maybe I am comparing apples to oranges... But, my computers can be on for ever and never a glitch. Linux is very efficient at managing resources and memory. So, I am just trying to understand the difference with Android, which uses the Linux kernel. Android is supposed to manage memory efficiently; that's why the use of an app killer is not recommended.
