Verizon Pre-order, Release date, and speculation thread

Kerberlyn, if no one's welcomed you to the forums, yet: welcome to the forums! :)

I waited 6 months to root my Nexus, which IMHO was about 2-3 months too long. Anything that's going to break & require warranty work is going to do so in a short period of time. After that, I'd say root that puppy.

You can always un-root it if it needs work.

Thank you. I have been an android freak since.... well quite awhile. I have always wanted to take the step (root) and never have. So I will find a great thread here and root away . :)

You may want to be a bit cautious with rooting the GS3. Unlike the nexus series samsung phones... when you root the GS3 (GS2) it triggers an indicator at boot (Yellow triangle) that indicates your phone has been rooted and also has a counter to count how many times it has been flashed.

There is currently an app called triangle away that works with the international GS3:

[06.06.2012][ROOT] TriangleAway v1.51 - xda-developers

I plan on waiting to root until they add support for the VZW version.

Another topic I wish would just go away already...

Sorry:p haven't been following much today:D

It doesn't really matter to me... it will ship when it ships. However, I imagine this has caused two main responses today:

1. OMMMMMMMMMMG it's going to ship early!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2.:mad::mad::mad: I can't believe VZW is delaying the phone again.

Treb, if the SGS3 gets JB before Halloween I'll be shocked, stunned and amazed. You know this thing will come bloated out of the box... and you know that VZW will need to soak test JB on every piece of bloat. So unless that sucker is rooted very shortly after Jelly Bean comes out on ROM, I don't hold out high hope for any Jelly love. I certainly don't think it will be a fast Verizon OTA, having experienced the 4.0.4 fiasco with the Nexus.

I'm with you on this one, but I'll go one further and speculate that the Jellybean update for the GS3 will not come this year (OTA). It was over 5 MONTHS before the Gnex got its first OTA update, and that thing is a Nexus! This is probably the single thing that is making me doubt my decision to upgrade to the GS3. How I would LOVE it if the GS3 was a Nexus...

Speaking of which, how long do we think the Gnex will get a build of Toro build of Jellybean? I'm sure the OTA update for that will be another 6 months as well, but shouldn't we see a build for rooters much sooner?

How does the brightness of the DX screen compare to the S3? I was in T mobile and found the S3 to be VERY dim compared to the DX. I'm having second thoughts on the S3, but will still keep my pre-order for 13 days.

Sorry, I still haven't held a SIII yet....dang it. A few people are saying the SIII has a dim screen. It's gonna come down to personal preference. I'm not canceling my preorder because of what other people say. I'll make my own decision when I get the phone in my hands.

I've been pleased with the screen on my Gnex and the reviews I've read on the GS3 say it is brighter than the gnex screen.

Finally got to play with one today but at tmobile. I wasn't terribly impressed to be honest. Nice screen and its really thin and light, but it seemed no faster than my Maxx on ICS. I just might wait for the razr HD

These phones now are about maxxing out the software and the hardware has more than caught up to the software. You are not going to see very much if any difference between 2 phones running dual core or more. I mean the maxx is no slouch and ICS brings new life into all phones. It is more of do you want a samsung or a moto.

Very True. I'm actually looking for a smoother lag free experience rather than blazing speed.

Come on guys! Unicorns or Pegasus's (pegasi?) aren't real! I've heard it directly from a verizon csr that they will be shipped via narwhal. Get with the program people!

My part of the ocean is too warm for the narwhal, and while he might make an exception for me ('cause I'm special like that;) ), what about all those land locked states?! I still vote Pegasus. If he was able to transport Medusa's head without any glaring mishaps, I trust him with my precious.

Has anyone here been to a T-mobile store that has them and seen both colors? I would imagine some of you live in big cities where it has been launched.

Yes, I have compared the pebble blue and marble white side by side. I personally prefer the white, for three main reasons:

Holding the blue closely you notice the fake metal texturing that it comes with. It doesn't look bad at all, but you know it's fake, and that bugs me for some reason.

Second, and more importantly, the button on the blue phone, for whatever reason, doesn't blend in as well with the face of the phone as the button on the white phone, lit up or not. After using the white phone for a while, that was the first thing that bothered me when switching to the blue phone. After using the blue phone for a while, that was the first thing that impressed me visually about the white phone once I was using it again. I just liked that blend better.

Third, the blue phone is dark. It will blend in with today's black, gunmetal, and chrome accented phones much more easily than the white phone. For some people, this is exactly what they want - to not stand out and have a normal looking phone. Yes, it's a gigantic 4.8 inch screen, and it's preposterously thin. Trust me, when you hold this phone in your hand for the first time, you might mumble unintelligibly for a moment while comprehending the thinness of the phone and it's bezel. But other than those factors, the pebble blue doesn't stand out like the white one does. The white one definitely looks more unique at a distance. If this is what you are going for, then you will not want the pebble blue. My dad has loved his white Fascinate for the last year and a half, and I admit to trying to steal his back cover a time or two ... :D

Both phones are clean looking, sleek, and impressive. They feel solid for being all plastic, and neither will disappoint. They are polished and well thought out devices that are exceedingly comfortable in the hand, despite the size.

Whether your plan is unlimited or you get switched over to one of the tiered pricing, your monthly costs wont change unless you use over 2gb a month.

FALSE FALSE FALSE. Perhaps your plan magically aligns with the stars making your statement true, but for me, there is NO scenario in which I can make my current plan cost the same, were I forced to switch, even if I drop down to ONE GB shared. I have used their online calculator and enlisted the help of reps in a corporate store. The only way this will save me money is if I combine my three lines (two smartphones and one dumbphone) and my dad's three lines together. Then we actually save quite a bit, cumulatively. This is the trick to making these shared plans work. Get your family together. Put 6 or 7 lines on the same plan, and you can see some real savings over having the same amount of lines on 2 or 3 separate plans. I crunched numbers extensively both ways. The only problem is my wife is extremely mad at my dad right now, and will not even remotely consider doing such a joining at this time. However, I have secured my contract and unlimited data for at least another 22 months, which will give me time to work on her. ;)

"(2) When you get your phone by FedEx, DO NOT activate on the SGS3! Call Verizon on another phone and activate it with Customer Support, getting names, dates, times, etc. and making sure that NOTHING changes on your plan except the phone. I have been advised to do this by numerous CSRs."

Just curious but what would be the reason for this. Whether you get the phone before or after the 28th who's to know if you paid full or got it subsidized? I recall reading anyway that "activating" a phone after the 28th automatically puts you on some default shared plan. Sure I'll call if I need and will to be safe but I'm just trying to understand why it's necessary. Why couldn't I simply swap my sim card from my GN to the SGlll.... Thx

According to the techs, if you have an activated LTE/4G Verizon SIM card, this is all you have to do. I did as much research as possible on this, too, asking the techs and other reps directly, and it should work. Your unlimited data plan, your phone number, etc. are all tied to that SIM card right now if you're on a Verizon LTE phone (and HALLELUJAH to THAT!!). It shouldn't do anything to your plan to move the card from this to the S III. I don't see why it would. If you're worried, call CS for sure, though. I would never discourage anyone from doing that. And those LTE SIM cards are known to go wonko now and again, so there are possibilities for issue regardless of how you go about it.

sprint has now pushed its store launch to July 1st. A week later for us isn't so bad.

Dude. Losing to Sprint by 10 minutes is bad, bad, bad. It's SPRINT!!! umadbro?? :p

Sorry, I still haven't held a SIII yet....dang it. A few people are saying the SIII has a dim screen. It's gonna come down to personal preference. I'm not canceling my preorder because of what other people say. I'll make my own decision when I get the phone in my hands.

It does not have a dim screen. I used it side by side with the Nexus. I don't think my Galaxy Nexus screen is dim either, but the S III is indeed brighter, and has corrected a few of the minor qualms that some folks had against the Nexus screen.

So I just checked my confirmation email and they have the account holders name under the Bill To section even though it's my CC info. Stupid VZW! I know I wouldn't have entered that info in so it HAD to be something they put in. I'm thinking that adding my girl (the account holder) to my CC may make it passable? But I guess that doesn't change the name on the card. It sounds like VZW refuses to change the bill to info and I don't want to lose my spot in line. Any thoughts? Guess I'll call VZW tomorrow and see if they can help.

So, does anybody know if we will lose our unlimited data plan if we activate after the 28th?

:p:p:p

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. :D

Mine still shows shipping 7/11

Nope, because it was ordered prior to the 28th you're still grandfathered into unlimited data... that is unless you upgrade another line on your plan at a later time and still want the discounted price... Got my order placed with an hour to spare :)
