Virgin Mobile Mobile Network Type

I just purchased the Virgin Mobile HTC Evo V 4g from Best Buy. I purchased the plum and it has the Sprint logo on the front and no VM logo on the back. My signal is very weak and I don't think my data is working correctly. My questioin is what should the Mobile Network type be? It shows as 1xRTT. My previous phone was the Wildfire S and the network type on that was listed as CDMA-1xRTT....is something wrong here? Thanks in advance for everyones help!!

1xRRT means you're connected to Sprint's "ancient" data network since you're are not receiving enough signal to connect at 3G or 4G speeds. If the Wildfire S also connects at 1xRRT... then you definitely have poor service in your area.

1xRRT tops out about 100kbps... which isn't worth missing with.

Check out Sprint's coverage maps online to see what signal strength "should" be at your location. Sprint has always been known for having poor coverage in smaller communities and rural areas. There's always at least one carrier in every area with an excellent build out. That's the one you need to find and go with.

Damn it... Virgin says my area is covered for 4/3g but my phone is way slower then my metro was... Like 2 or 3 mbps slower... Big sucky difference... I'm thinking about t mobile.... Cuz this is ridiculous....point 5 mbps on 3g and like two mbps tops on 4g... no longer a happy camper

This is interesting. I also bought the plum evo v from bestbuy and, when I'm not using 4g, my data has been stuck in 1x since I've had it. The 4g works fine. I know its not coverage either, my gf has the phone too and she gets 3g perfectly fine. I went to bring it back and the bestbuy guy said its because I'm being throttled for going over the data limit. This hadn't crossed my mind because I had barely had the phone, but it is possible, because I swapped mid cycle. I'd still be pretty shocked if indeed I had already gone over the cap before making the switch, but its possible. I have a window of about a week between my new cycle and my 30 day return window to see if the 3g will kick in with the new month. If it doesn't, ill be exchanging it.

Why don't you go online to VMUSA and look? You can see your data usage if you sign into your account.

If I were a weaker man I'd cry
Wow! Someone with crappier sprint coverage than me. You're not missing much their "4G" (Wimax) coverage is VERY limited(ends a few miles N of where I live), and their "3G" here is about 56k dialup, and apparently the ENTIRE metro area isn't much better, from a pcmag article that I just stumbled across.

...and yes, it's CDMA so at least cell should be good... I've seen 1xRTT here a few times but those were mainly only when I was activating a phone, but as I mentioned their "3G" here is no great shakes.

Personally once the next nexus is out, I'm STRONGLY inclined to buy one directly and put it on the T-Mobile $50 plan(500m cell, unlimited text, 2GB data). In this case it's not just the crappy sprint coverage, but also that I'd like official OS updates and be getting them frequently and sooner rather than later(Samsung where's my ICS?! Better be JB now!)/never(quite likely with VM IME)/hacked up version.

[EDIT]
D'oh! I see that you even get "4G"! Yep, leaving VMUSA as soon as the next Nexus is out...

is what I get, but actually worse than they show.

Funny a week before that article was published Sprint still showed wimax in Detroit, and clearwire is certainly still there... ...and look at how much T-Mo kicks butt v. Sprint, cripes they're 2nd only to Verizon even though I know that their coverage pretty well sucks beyond metro/insterstate areas... but I don't go off into the stocks enough any longer for that to matter much...

...now just waiting for Nexus S2 (or T? who knows)... better be a quad core...

If you notice, on the side of that PCMag article, they have most the results of most major cities that they tested. Based on the result of those tests, particularly in the city I live in and cities that I visit, I think I am likely to dump VM and switch to T-Mobile (get the $30 plan, 100 min with 5GB web, from their website) and the Google Nexus.

I think the column that most convinces me is the percent of time that 3G service is above 144Kbps -- seems like in most cities that Sprint 3G is slower right around 50% of the time.

See this is where I'm confused...on my Wildfire S my network type showed as CDMA-1xRTT...on the Evo V 4G it only shows as 1xRTT...something tells me this is due to it being a Sprint branded phone? I don't know but this just seems fishy that I have 2 different phones from the same carrier but the mobile network types are different...HELP!!! lol

They mean the same thing. It's like "Coke" vs. "Coca-Cola".

I don't know why HTC's designers weren't consistent from handset to handset, but don't get too hung up it. Whether it shows up as "CDMA-1xRTT" just "1xRTT" the phone is just letting you know that it could only connect to the slower 1xRTT network for data.

FWIW, our phones always use 1xRTT for voice telephony and SMS, no matter what you see on the phone display. The 3G and 4G networks are used for data only, so when you see "1xRTT" on the phone's display that means normal voice telephony and SMS but slow everything else.

Why? Very few apps are able to take advantage of dual core let alone quad. The S3 dual core US version actually scores better on most benchmarks compared to the quad core World version.

I'm not sure where you're looking on the site, when I click on data history it simply says "unlimited".

I'm really curious what is VM is doing with the Evo V 4G. I had the phone and, while I really liked the Evo, the service was driving me nuts. I was getting 1.5-2.5 mbps download on 4G. My problem is that too many places I couldn't get 4G and, in places where I was getting 3G, I was averaging about 200 kbps. What broke the back for me were a few times/places I was getting 50 kbps.

What has me interested though, is that during the time I had the Evo (before returning it), it didn't show my data usage on VM. Since returning my phone, and changing my account back to my Optimus V, it is tracking my data usage again. Currently it shows I've used 31MB -- the amount I've used since switching phones. I can't help but wonder if Virgin isn't going to track Evo V owners, at least the ones that are using WiMax.
