Help Are we going to be able to access the Nexus 7 internal hard drive like with a normal cell phone?

Yes we will but it will be a slightly different protocol. In my GNex this makes things a bit more annoying with Win7 since copying anything to the phone which isn't an image file brings up an additional prompt. Beyond that nuisance, it works pretty much the same.

They're pushing us towards cloud storage but not mandating it, if that makes any sense.

I stumbled across it yesterday when trying to figure out how to download from Google drive with the official app. Shame that Microsoft cut down their skydrive from 25gb to 7gb...otherwise that would have been ideal! I've got a buffalo terabyte drive at home and am hoping to make use of that as it will be a bit more secure. Just can't seem to get it to work remotely at the moment.

I'm having exactly the same trouble with my Synology NAS at the moment. I'm thinking of selling it and upgrading my Drive or Dropbox storage.

My problem is that my drive just won't save the settings. It works fine at home, but it has a webaccess feature that keeps crashing. It's a shame as I get free Wi-Fi out and about so could make good use of it. I've set it up to reset and format fully today so will give it another bash tonight. Fingers crossed it works!

I have read a number of posts on this topic and have yet to see anyone tell how it actually works. After I connect the Nexus 7 to a Windows 7 PC, do I have to run a special program to transfer files or am I still able to just use Windows Explorer? Thanks.

I'm assuming it's the same as my Galaxy Nexus.

You should be able to connect to your PC via USB and it will install some driver. Once complete it will mount the tablet not as a drive but as a media device. It will mostly act as a drive but there are small and annoying exceptions.

It really wants media; video and image files. Those will transfer to the device with no problem. MP3 files, for example, freak Windows out a bit and you'll get an additional prompt stating this may not work right. They will work but you have to confirm that you still want to copy the MP3s. If you are copying a bunch of files a few at a time, this will get irritating fast.

I've never had any prompts for copying anything from the GNex to the PC.

So it works without any additional SW beyond the driver (which was a nightmare to get right on the GNex) but it's not quite as smooth as just mounting the damn device as a drive.

That's assuming it works like the GNex does.

It's not the cleanest setup yet but I have owncloud running on my vps. It lets you setup your own cloud service with a lot of nice apps (music/video streaming, odf viewer, bookmarks, etc...) and has an android app. If you wanted to run it on your home computer you could just use dynamic dns and poke the right holes in your firewall. It would be a pretty easy hobbiest project for an old computer, plus then you have GBs of "cloud" storage
