[Verizon] What does rooting erase?

I don't care about pics/texts/music/etc....

Only thing I don't want to lose before I root and flash Jelly Bean are my contacts and apps. Will rooting delete these as well, and if so, is there any way to back them so i can load them into my new ROM once I root and flash.

I have never installed ROM's or rooted before, but am sick and tired of waiting for Verizon to get their shit together!

your contacts and apps should be backed up to the cloud in google

go to settings>accounts> and click google

then click your google email listed there

it should show a list of stuff that gets backed up and when it was last synched.

make sure it all is synched.

to be sure go here and login to your google account, all your contacts should be listed https://www.google.com/contacts/

once that is done you should be able to do whatever just fine, once you login with your gmail account to your new rom, it will download all your stuff.

all your paid apps are always saved to your google account in the market (play store) always.

IN MY EXPERIENCE, when you login to your google account on your new rom all your other apps will automatically start downloading as well.

I also will be rooting soon and I just want to confirm some things.

Rooting alone won't rase my data, only flashing the new ROM correct? Also, the app data like game saves and such is not synced with the cloud and that requires backup if I want to keep it, right? Is there anything else that we should know before rooting? My plan is to root and then instal Titanium Backup and backup my app data before flashing jelly bean

BTW, is there any point or advantage to taking the 'official' OTA from Verizon when they finally do release Jelly Bean? Will I even get the notification now that I'm rooted?

The ONLY advantage to waiting for Verizon's OTA is that everything is guaranteed to work. ROMs, on the other hand, are cutting-edge and things are sometimes hit-or-miss... but you'll have it months in advance (I don't expect a JB OTA until probably January).

If you are rooted and have a custom recovery installed like ClockworkMod or TWRP, you might get the notification but can't flash it. You would have to be 100% stock to flash the OTA. If you have a custom ROM installed, they generally block OTA notifications.

Ok, so if I get the OTA from Verizon, then I have to flash back to my stock backup ROM (which is obviously the VZW approved ROM), and then check for update and flash new 'official' VZW update, correct?

Yeah, I got sick of waiting for VZW approved updates. As a matter of fact, when I emailed them today to inquire about Jelly Bean, they said they hadn't even received the update from Samsung yet...which means they haven't even STARTED the carrier testing (which rep said was 'fairly quick'...try not to laugh).

Anyway, flashed all the new stuff today. Definitely never buying a carrier branded phone ever again. Waiting for next Nexus device in fall/winter and buying from Google.

no. You wait till a Dev creates a rooted version of the OTA...which is usually within hours. In most cases the build will leak prior to the Official release and you'll be able to flash it then.

Will rooting my phone or flashing it erase my data because i am using the RootDroid2Update. Bat file and i need to open the sbf to flash my phone before i go root it will either of these processess erase data on my internal memory or external sd card?

What phone are you running? Because this thread is located in the Galaxy Nexus forum. Just wanting to make sure you don't end up confused or receive advice that may not apply to your situation.
