Help battery flatlines overnight!?

last night went to sleep with 42% power left, woke up, 38% is still there!

now here is my question for you...i understand trying to track down the battery drain...

but in this case...what are you going to do with a phone that has 38% battery to start your day??...

why not just charge it overnight...because we both know youre not going to make it the rest of the day on that 38%

Currents is okay if you disable automatic sync and you just want sync news whenever you load up the app. I've found facebook that it's one of the worst applications to have for Android. Asides from a real battery killer, it doesn't behave the way you want to. It rarely works on low connections, have notifications completely turned off and it will still wake up your phone. Apparently, which I'm trying out now, Friendcaster is a much bettery app to use for Facebook.

over 2 days now, phone still alive, so I will have to conclude that facebook was the culprit that killed my battery randomly during the night.

to answer another person above, with 38% power I still have enough to get through to about 2pm, also I generally charge towards the evening so on most occasions I wake up with a phone still with 98-97% power for the day. Its also about convenience of not living in fear when facebook app strikes...say you are out with your buddies, its 1am you are having a good time, you need to txt, call somewhere, but you realize FB app just killed your battery from 60% power to zero...it has happened to me before, really aggravating.

anyhow, glad this issue went away, anyone else having similar, recommend uninstalling facebook app, and currents.

well sad to say, after two days of working, my S3 is back to its overnight suicides again...i think it has to do something with the phone being inactive for a few hours or more. Last night went to sleep with 80% power, woke up with 0%... going to exchange it this weekend for another one hopefully Telus will allow that, and see if its just a hardware issue on my current S3. If not, then this will be the last samsung product I buy, as my HTC never had this issue, with the exact same software suite on it.

@ OP and to anyone else having the issue.

I to am having the same problem, it started out of nowhere about 3 nights ago. My phone will be at 60% when I shut my eyes and I'll wake up 7 hours later to a phone that is completely dead. To all the nay Sayers and know it all's...Yes I've cleared all my apps, nothing is running, I don't use social meadia apps like Facebook, and nothing is really left to run on my phone while I'm sleeping, so it is a problem! This IMO is a random wakelock within the software that is running amok and affecting random peoples phones. To those saying we should keep our phones on the charger overnight, just a hint...that's a mask, not a solution to a problem that looks to be affecting a good number of us weeks after getting the S3. Hopefully an update is pushed to fix the issue soon.

That sounds like a spot-on assessment. Better Battery Stats (as an example) will be able to reveal the culprit(s) - set a Custom Reference last thing at night and then check for partial and/or kernel wakelocks in the morning.

if other phones, running android, dont have this problem, then YES it is a samsung problem, so please dont post useless replies.

please...go to ANY specific phone's forum (especially new popular devices)...just pick one at random...and there will be countless posts about "terrible battery life."

its been shown my countless people here that this doesn't happen on every phone...for instance...i can post you a screen shot of my phone having sat for nearly 3 hours and still reporting 100% battery...

for it to be inherently a SAMSUNG issue then it would happen on ALL of the phones...this is FAR from the case...the situations being reported here are few and far between...

it is 99% likely that it is an app, setting, or network configuration issue causing the problem and not the phone (or the OS) itself...the problem is tracking down the app or issue...

its even more of an issue for international users because its possible they purchased an unlocked/unbranded device that is having some sort of network conflict with their carrier (which is a cause of a lot of the "fast dormancy" issues)

these are the facts

1. this does not happen to ALL Samsung Galaxy S3 devices
2. it has happened to the same people even after replacing their devices with new ones

the chances of getting back to back phones with the EXACT same issue, when it doesn't happen to every phone is slim to none....so it has to be tracked to an app, setting, or network conflict...the problem here is troubleshooting is a complete pain because it requires you to leave your phone stock for a few days and slowly add apps to see when the problem arises...and can only be tested for when you can leave the phone dormant for hours on end...

I had some bad battery drain at first, albeit not exactly the same problem, but I always charge my phone at night. I found the culprit to be Avast anti-virus software. I i uninstalled one app every day or so, observing the different in battery life after each uninstal. Once Avast was gone my phone batter was 10 times better. Haven't bothered re-installing and messing with settings to see if I could fix it.

Better Battery stats has helped me fine some wake locks for other apps as well. There is a notorious walke lock for Chrome browser that tends to kill that battery but it seems to be fairly infrequent. You may check it out.

Is it possible that you are setting the phone in a spot that just happens to have poor reception?

It's 1% all night, sometimes I'll wake up with the same level as when i went to sleep. I don't really do anything special before I put it down for the night, just turn off data, wifi and sync.

I have definitely had to adjust some coming to Android from BB, but even after I have read tons of forums and troubleshooting myself to improve my battery life on my GS3, I still don't have fantastic life like some are saying.

I am rooted with a Rom that has CPU Editor built in and a battery saver mode on. While at work, with great reception and Wifi, BT, GPS, Autosync (basicaly everything) turned off, I still get 2-4% battery drain per hour with it just sitting there. More if I pick it up and send some texts.

How are you getting such great life while at stand by Shotgun? Do you have a lot of frozen apps? Any tips you can give us?

Ya gotta stop blaming us (the users) so quickly within the Forums!

Now onto the battery issues, looked at from a whole, I agree that when you visit forums with new phones there are loads of people that complain about battery life, its like white on rice! However with the S3, I'm not running any different apps then the ones I had on my Note, Gnex, Razr, etc...And I'm still having some really crazy battery drains. My story very quickly for those new to this thread.

1st GS3- Fell in love with it, but very bad battery life from jumpstreet, major drains morning ,noon , and night. Did 2 hard resets, bought an extra battery...No dice, nothing helped.

2nd GS3- Awesome battery life from jumpstreet, no issues for a few weeks, same exact apps, same usage as the 1st one. No issues what so ever with drains at night or anything like that. And then.....

4 nights ago the drains started while the phone was not being used, mainly overnight with a drop of say 50% without the screen being on and while the phone should be in sleep mode. This is with me clearing the apps before putting it down, without any new apps downloaded, anotherwords without anything new? So seriously....What gives? Who do we blame, are Ghosts taking mine or anyone else's phone who's having this issue?

So it's appearing that people are getting a little heated with their responses and what they think is causing battery drain problems. While I can't say for certain what it is, I do want to point out that people are appearing to get heated.

Could everyone who is about to post do a quick read-over of their post and think to themselves: Does this sound hostile? If so, please revise to dull the edge a little.

Thanks! :)

im not BLAMING anyone...the problem is you cant differentiate between blame, and not agreeing with your completely anti-Samsung stance on the matter

may be the case, but not necessarily Samsung's fault...plenty of apps are incompatible or have bugs running on new devices that get patched by the app developer...you can't point the finger at anyone until you've explored all possibilities...unfortunately most of the people complaining are not willing to actually do this

so whats keeping the phone awake?...its easy enough to find out...what do the wake locks look like?...

have you run the phone completely stock to see if it happens?...SOMETHING is keeping your phone awake...and it doesn't happen on every device...or even most of them...so if its happened to you, with multiple devices it suggests an app you have installed...a setting that is off...or a network conflict of some sort...

Sean,

Could you please post your screenshot of 100% with 3 hours off charge and help me with mine as I certainly don't get that....

i must have lost the one showing 3hrs in a data wipe while flashing a ROM by accident...but this one is close enough i would think....

as far as helping out to get you here..im not sure what to say...i don't think i do anything special to preserve battery life at all...i leave WiFi, GPS, Data on at all times...i always plug my phone in at night to charge it and leave it till i get up so i don't take any special care of the battery...

OBVIOUSLY this screenshot was from VERY VERY minimal usage...even though screen was the top battery user...i believe it was only a few minutes at that point...

I purchased this phone a little over 2 weeks ago and I am having the same problem. The first time it happened, I had charged my phone to 100% and went to sleep with the phone in standby. I awoke 8 hours later to see the phone completely dead. I thought it was just a fluke. For the next week, I encountered no issues. However, just this morning it happened again. I had charged my phone up to 100% but while I was sleeping I awoke to the lower power beep to find that 85% of my battery had discharged in 6 hours.

I have already disabled all the Samsung bloatware on the phone including S Voice, the Samsung Account, and Samsung Push Service. I also have email to manually push. Yet my battery has now completely or nearly completely discharged while in standby mode.

This does appear to be a problem with the Galaxy SIII.

I too have this issue except mine happened the first night I got my phone. I downloaded just a few apps, one being an alarm clock app. Charged the phone up to the time I went to bed (about 97%). the next morning my kids woke me up. I went to look at the alarm and the phone was dead. I removed the app and things were better. until a few days ago.

While we can all try to catch the rouge app, it almost seems like it's the OS and it's interaction with various apps. It happens to me one night, I don't change anything and the next night it's fine. Go figure. Now it's just leave it plugged in all night and wake up with 100%

I am having the same issue. I am owning s3 from 14 days now, and overnight drainage happened 5-6 times by now. I switch off GPS,4G,Wifi,Auto sync and still no help. I bought it from best buy, I visited the store and they replaced battery for me and issue persists with new battery as well. Going to exchange my device with new one now.

I was wondering if anyone have had overnight battery issues or have found a solution.
I recently upgraded to he samsung gs3 for att and have been having a huge problem withe the battery which makes it impossible to rely on the phone while i am sleeping (emergency calls, alarm, etc.).
The problem comes from me waking up to a dead phone a few time, which also has caused me to miss appointments due to the alarm not going off.
It appears that the battery completely discharges overnight or near the morning.
I am not allow to post my screenshot so ill reference a post here at android forum:
androidforums(dot com)/samsung-galaxy-s3/581421-overnight-battery-drains-50-70-a.html
I an experincing a similar problem where the battery discharges a steady rate until a point in the night where it nise dives. Also note that during this dive the phone is awake nor is the screen on.
My wifi and data is turned off, and power save turned on
This has happened with my alarm on and off

Oddly enough this does not happen every night and never happens when i have my phone with me during the day.
The only changes ive made to the phone since unboxing is switch over my sdcard from my old phone and download 2 apps (beejive and Tango).
And the only thing i can think of that changes at night and during the day is where the phone is placed (on top of my wallet which is on top of my desktop circuitbreaker) and the phone being used slightly more (i dont use the phone very often).

This is the second gs3 behaving this way, i have already returned the first one that had this problem and got this one which is having the same problem!?

Ive tried searching for solutions or information on this with no luck, so any help would be amazing.

Thanks

Easy. I had this problem and though I know that batteries have advanced greatly, it is still bad to leave them charging for extended periods of time (Hence the "battery is full. Please unplug now." warning) I personally live in a town of about 110,000 with no 4G (on sprint anyway) and very poor service pretty much all around. I also live in a very low valley in this town. My phone was going from 100% to low 20%s in one night. Finally I decided to turn my phone onto airplane mode. I also use Task Manager to clear out my RAM and
voila! It now drops a maximum of 3% a night and thats on weekends when I sleep in!
I know you probably got it solved or gave up by now but just thought I'd let you know, so as to help out others in need.
