"Jellybean 4.1.2 update"

I flashed it over on my phone and I didn't loose anything. If you want to start fresh then an FDR would wipe everything out like you are asking. There are some apps out there that save progress on apps and the like so you might want to look into that if you are going to do the FDR.

What are your thoughts on the upgrade/update? Did you notice any issues just flashing over top of ICS instead of FDR'ing and then flashing JB?

How do you clear your cache and what cache?
1) Press and hold the Power button and turn the phone off.
2) When the screen turns off, press and hold Volume Down and Volume Up and Power.
3) When the white HBOOT screen appears, use the Volume Down button to move down to “RECOVERY.”
4) Press the Volume Up button to select “RECOVERY.”
5) When the triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at the same time.
6) Using the Volume buttons, scroll down to “Wipe cache partition” and select it by pressing Power Button.
7) When process complete and Menu reappears, use Volume buttons to select “Reboot system now” and press Power Button.

I know the OTA JB update is suppose to come out some time in the first quater of this year, but have VZW and Motorola set an exact date yet?

Without trying to be negative, a lot of these OTA update release projections tend to be goals, but not necessarily deadlines. I wouldn't be surprised if it slips to Q2 or later seeing as we're already 2/3 the way through Q1.

It is highly recommended that everyone do a Factory Data Reset after upgrading. It is so important it is surprising they didn't make it a requirement in the process.

With a FDR you start with a clean slate. Without it odd problems can show up days, weeks, or months later and cost enormous amounts of time to troubleshoot. The result then is always to do a FDR.

So, I would assume that they would have to release a slightly different version of Jelly Bean than what they did back in December. If that is the case, then even those of us who flashed that release should be able to update to this upcoming version, right? My reasoning is simple, some people did in fact successfully complete that first release. It was pulled for some unknown reason, but most likely because there were some issues with it still. The new release should include fixes for those issues, and should download like any other update. What do you guys think?

I'm sure this has been covered already but just to make sure. I flashed the Christmas miracle JB version. And as we all hope Moto won't leave us out to dry without being able to update to the official version.... We will be able to do so even with just flashing it ourselves correct? I'm not rooted or anything, just wanted to clean up my phone and make it smoother than it was on ICS. That and I had the M for a couple days and it comes with JB. (nice phone but to small for a guy with big hands and being 6'3" like me) Anywho, I'd really rather not get stuck to flashing ICS and then doing an FDR and then getting the "official" update and then having to do ANOTHER FDR. Since it takes me about 2 days to get my phone totally where I like it, I can't take doing it twice.

Hearing that the soak test invite e-mails are out is nice to hear. I am having problems getting my device registered over on the motorola network forums so that I can take part in the soak myself. I've been told that my IMEI number looks wrong but it takes and says I'm good but won't submit when I hit the button. I have no clue as to what's wrong. I hope we hear of more people getting the invite.

Oh one more thing, since I am on the Christmas version...if I get into the soak test will I be able to get it in the first place?

Might be the 14 vs 15-digit thing. According to what I'm reading in various forums, for some reason if you use the *#06# method to obtain your IMEI number, for some people, it returns a 14-digit number. But if the same people use the Settings/About Phone/Status method, a 15th digit is included.

That's what the problem usually is. Mine did the same thing. Once I got the imei through settings it went right in.

Thanks a lot BullyDawg grateful for your input very clearly explained.
Only small problem when rebooted it gave error in notifications that my SD card was damaged. Removed card, copied all info from card reader to temp folder on PC, replaced card and restarted phone and error cleared without having to reformat card as error advised. (Strange?).
I've wiped my cache partition dozens of times and have never seen that error! Sorry!

You would have to have had a email sent to you if you signed up to give Motorola feedback on stuff. They would have sent you a email with a link to fill some info out about what phone you have and all that good stuff. Not sure if they would have sent the soak test to your phone or how you download it after giving them that info. I didnt want to do the soak test in case it might have messed something up on my phone, I am just going to wait for the OTA release of it.

OK I already know going into this the answer I'm probably going to get before I ask but I'm going to ask anyways just to be safe, and in case there is something wrong with my phone that I need checked out.

So I flashed or side-loaded the JellyBean update to my Razr MAXX from December. I did it a week or so ago but I didn't FDR afterwards just to test the waters and see what would happen. At first I was fine and the phone runs AWESOME. I still love JB but my phone with constant use gets sluggish and slows down. I have to restart it oh at least once every other day I'd say. That is a bit much don't you think? So here I am hoping that I won't have to FDR but probably know that Thom is going to tell me to do so. (Thom I love your advice and you have been such a great help since I joined up here, and that includes from day one of rooting my old Eris, Photon, Bionic, and now I'm on the MAXX but stock) I figured after this long I can at least pick on you a bit.

It's the answer that I don't want to hear because I really hate setting up my phone a bunch of times. I have noticed that I have 2-3 of all my ringtones and picture albums so I'm guessing that the FDR is going to fix that. I listened and did the FDR on my Bionic when ICS came out even after I had already tried an earlier leak. This is getting long but I wanted everything to make sense. So I haven't put anything weird on my phone or messed with settings. I have disabled some apps that I don't like/want on my phone like maps and streetview. Youtube is included in that too. You get the picture. So is there anything else I can do OTHER than and FDR?

A major upgrade like Gingerbread to ICS of ICS to JB is a big deal. It is sort of like going from Windows XP to Windows 7.

There are too many things that can go wrong and there are too many variables and too many organizations involved. You may even find some apps that simply don't work in the new system. Some problems might show up weeks or months after the upgrade.

The only hope you have for not having future problems is to do a Factory Data Reset after the upgrade.

I have had NO problems in ICS on the Bionic after the Factory Data Reset. Did you have any?

You know the answer. (Think of it as an opportunity to clean up that junk you just never got around to.)
