Root Maybe this will shed some light on the UD vs CM issue

Like I stated in the other thread, BlackDroid may be a douche for what he did, but the way Droid Forums handled this is absolutely inexcusable. They backed BlackDroid knowing these rumors swirled around his work long before the eruption on the forum, they treated CM like shit, and they allowed their moderators to behave like 12 year olds treating the forum like it was a video game where they could choose sides and ban members. I've never seen such an unprofessional way of dealing with a forum disruption before. Every one of the moderators on that board suck.

I was just reading through the final goodbye thread. Blackdroid cracks me up. Over the past few days, he has been called out, proven to be a liar and a thief, and was thrown out of the forum... and yet this is the crap he is still posting...

the blackdroid said:
5. I HAVE MORALS. If I made a mistake I will be man enough to say it, but I'm not going to lie and bow down to someone and give them false credit.

He's pathological, he honestly doesn't think he has done anything wrong in this case nor did he do anything wrong when he got kicked off of Alldroid for using Pete's ROM, it's really sad actually.

Wow. Does he really believe the issue at AllDroid was that Pete was "jealous" of him, or is he just hoping everyone on DF is too stupid/fanboyish to learn what really happened?

Someone in that thread also made the (excellent) point that pushing this "Sorry one file got left over by mistake" line in the face of such ridiculously conclusive proof, one of two things is happening:

1) BD is dishonest and therefore his ROM can't be trusted
2) BD is so incompetent that he honestly has no idea what he did wrong, in which case his ROM probably shouldn't be trusted

Well, seems the war is "won" here...

Not really.

BD and team are going full-time with their website-that was already there anyhow..plus they had enough supporters that I bet it doesn't take long to go full swing. Main difference is that here on this forum, over at DF, and of course AD, you won't hear much about him and his ROMS.

I bet "My Droid World" picks up a lot of the slack.

BD may have his shady ways, or just plain out does not somehow realize why what he is doing is "ethically" wrong, BUT... he assembles a good enough and good enough-looking ROM to keep quite a fanbase. Once this blows over and disappears into the not-so-long-ago past, there will be many more newbies that will join the clan.

So basically, while many of you are right, and many wrong, and the "right" side one.. there most likely was no gain in all of this in the end. Unless BD outright violates a copyright law, or loses his supporters and donations to keep the site going, he will be there.

I guess the best part of it all is that most of us won't be hearing about BD as much now(and the ensuing BS flame wars), but again other than making a few bumps in BD's road..the battle may be won,,but the war lost.

I just hope this comes as a lesson to those who insist on senseless flaming instead of constructive criticizm(Yea Right:rolleyes:). As I've said before, all it does is help take a major sh*t on our whole community.

Now to explain myself before I get flamed.. Well, I think it is a shame that things had to go the way they did. I do not 100% agree with either side. I wholly agree that credit should be given where it is due, but also I have run some UD ROMS and in general liked them. I have run CM and like the features and the concept behind it. I fully appreciate the amount of time and work that is behind it also. JRummy's remix makes it better and gets rid of the "stock boring" look. UD10 gave it the look of the rest of the UD ROMS, which I happen to like better. There also must be enough of a difference in the OS files(Yes I read thru the spreadsheet) that it somehow might just run faster as many have reported. I myself have not run it yet, but am intrigued enough to try. I also know enough, just as 9 of 10 ROM users out there, to know who and what team created the original source(this is one main point I tried to make over at DF).

I am by no means a "BD fanboy" and will admit most of what I like about UD is the theme. I also am not 100% behind any single dev. out there. I load a ROM..if I like it I keep it until another "Bests" it in some way. I of course appreciate all the work that every single dev. out there does in what is mainly a free market.

So let me see if I understand all of this. CM and Koush take the ROM that Google built and changed it some and released it calling it their own. Did they credit Goggle? So Blackdroid comes along and take the ROM that Goggle built but CM and Koush changed, modifies it and releases it and calls it his own. Wow, so nobody is any better than the other. I have heard the term "stole" from the CM camp. Well look everyone has stolen code. In my former profession, (retired police officer of over 25 years), if one is a thief then they both are. Anyone who steals and uses code from somebody else and then gets upset when someone else does the same thing to them. Unbelievable. Something tells me that this is a lot more than just ownership of code. Because if you compare Goggles code with CM and Kosh's ROM I bet there are a lot of similarities. I think it's about too many people sitting behind too many computers in their own little world feeling like they are really important. In the world of phones CM and Kosh are forward thinkers and innovators. But the way this whole situation was handled makes me believe they think they invented the entire ROM. Well that credit goes to Google after all. To all developers, thank you for improving our phones, but please don't take yourselves so seriously. Just my humble opinion. Not that anybody asked....

It is more then that... CM and Koush use the Google source, but they modify the source code and recompile it to be there own... Anyone can do this and it is what open source is all about. However CM and Koush have never ever not given credit to google and everyone knows where the source comes from.

What BD did was take the CM and Koush ROM made a few graphic changes and called it his own, when he was called on it he denide that he did it and claimed he complied his own code from the Google source code, this was proven to be a lie as the MD5's match exactly with the CM / Koush ROMs (something that isn't possible if you complied the source yourself)...

Think of it like this, CM and Koush took a Ford F150 stock, droped a new engine in it, added a bunch of lights a new horn and some other upgrades... They release it as the new CM / Koush F150 giving credit to Ford for the original stock truck.

BD comes along and takes the new CM / Koush F150 and changes the paint job, he then gives no credit to CM/Koush and claims that he rebuilt the engine and everything else.

If someone asked Cyanogen if he was simply taking Google's code and making some changes to it, he would probably say "of course, doesn't everyone realize this? I mean they even sent me a cease and desist at one point because I was doing something they didn't want me to, but we got it straightened out". If you ask blackdroid if he was using Cyanogen's build and passing it off as his own he would outright lie. I mean, he had the ClockworkMod Recovery file in his ROM! Koush built that himself.

That's the difference between Cyanogen and blackdroid, Cyanogen knows and admits what he's doing and actually makes useful modifications. blackdroid denies that he uses Cyanogen's ROM and calls it his own; whether or not blackdroid knows what he's doing is debatable, and it's quite likely he really doesn't realize he's stealing code, in which case I feel genuinely sorry for him because he's going to get a rude awakening one of these days from the real world.

no, they acknowledge they are using googles code, its free to use, so no, not thieves, they are hackers (the good term, not the bad)

That all goes back to the difference between Hacker and Cracker... terms which were lost long ago and now without them, it just causes confusion. :(

It just makes my blood boil when someone that does illegal things is referred to as a "hacker". It gives the difficult, legitimate work of the hacking community a bad name.

Yeah. Unfortunately, that is one of those things that the media is responsible for. "News" reporters who don't check sources before publishing... they started referring to crackers as "hackers", and next thing you know, everyone in the world thinks hackers are evil people set on destroying the cyberworld.
