Hi, I got my N7 yesterday, and initially wanted to root it straight away. Then I started browsing the forums and saw a number of threads with rooting problems with 4.3 (I'm still on 4.2.2 btw, haven't received the OTA update as yet).

Anyway I was thinking I should unlock the bootloader right away so I won't lose any data when I root, but hold back on the rooting for a while until I get 4.3 and everything's stable.

Does this make sense? Would it have any negative effects? This is only my second Android device (had quite a lot of trouble rooting my first, but it worked in the end) and I definitely don't want to brick it.

You're title suggests that you bought a second generation nexus 7, but you posted in the first generation root forum. Seeing as how the device has 4.2.1 on it, it would appear to be first generation because I believe trophy is correct that the new one has 4.3 on it. If it is indeed first generation, then using the toolkit colchiro linked to would be the easiest method to unlock assuming that you have windows.

Woops, sorry about that, didn't even think about "New" causing an issue. Anyway it's a first gen N7, and I did end up using the toolkit to sort things out.

Should I root now, or wait for 4.3 then root?
Since you want to get it done now while the device is empty, use the toolkit to flash the factory image google provides. After that is done, then root it using the appropriate method. I have a feeling the toolkit's method is outdated and won't work on 4.3.

If you have the Wifi version, use this
If you have the data enabled version, use this

I wondered the same thing.

Guess it's too late to return it and get the latest model (for a few $$ more). I'd like the newer one.

The toolkit is as it implies, a bunch of tools with "unlock" only being one of them.

Actually I got it via Pocket Change (which I also found out about on the forums here). Was shipped maybe about three weeks ago, so the New one wasn't out as yet. No complaints from me though!
