Blackberry Messenger coming to Android and iOS

Yes, but from what I've read of BBM:

-Messages are sent/received much quicker than SMS.
-You get new message notifications on BBM (crackberry light).
-Allows you to see if someone has read your message and if they are responding in real time.
-Allows you to attach pictures and videos.
-Works internationally without having to pay obscene data charges.

The multi-platform apps are getting better but I don't think any of them do all of that as well as BBM.

Sounds pretty nice, but I'm assuming it uses data packets to do all this? I've never had a Blackberry and don't see what the big deal is. I don't have a lot of friend with Blackberries so I'm not super psyched about it. Sounds like a good piece of software though if people are this excited about it.

With BBM being a single-platform app, you have to convince them (or vice-versa) to get a Blackberry - probably even more difficult.

I've never heard of somebody buying a BB for BBM. It's one of those features they start using after they get a BB (personal or work phone) and it comes installed on every BB. Even if the third party app did everything BBM does (none currently do) there's still a transition period where you're asking them to use both apps. That takes time and of course if a new better app comes out you have to start the process over. Anyways, here's another discussion about BBM over on AC. Here's some some things they bring up:

- Everybody can see your status (busy, unavailable etc.)
- Ability to set up multiple group chats (friends, family, work etc.)
- Ability to send out calendar events which seamlessly integrate with the calendar app.
- Ability to send out lists which everybody in the group can update.

You can't do those things on Android or iOS without using multiple apps. I don't use chat/messenger apps either, e-mail is quick enough for me, but I also realize there's a lot of people who can't live without them.
