High-speed charging?

Perhaps I'm not understanding how USB 3.0 is supposed to work with the Note 3. On both my work PC (Dell Optiplex 1020, 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise) and my home PC (Dell XPS 8500, 64-bit Windows 7 Professional), whenever I connect the Note, a popup comes up saying the following:

"This device can perform faster
This SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device can transfer information if you connect it to a Super Speed USB 3.0 port."

1. The ports being used on both computers are the blue USB ports with the USB logo that has the SS. Those ARE the 3.0 ports, aren't they?

2. I'm definitely using USB 3.0 cables (the 2-part connector), not a regular micro USB cable.

On the Note itself, when I click on the USB options, it gives me the option of enabling "USB 3.0" for data transfer, but when I do, it tells me that it's only temporary and will turn itself off after 10 minutes since it interferes with wifi.

So what's the deal here?

Is USB 3.0 broken, or is it strictly an on-demand feature? If the latter, how does this impact the charge rate? Does just using a USB 3.0 cable provide the faster charging rate or if the USB 3.0 capability on the phone is not active, does the charge rate drop down?

I couldn't find any info on your laptop, but your desktop should have 4 USB 2.0 and 4 USB 3.0 ports.

I don't have any CPU's that I use that are also USB 3.0, but I've also never seen that prompt. Best way to tell if it's truly working is to try transferring data on USB 3.0 port vs. transferring data on a USB 2.0 port.

I thought USB 3.0 was just for data (faster data transfer). I didnt know/think it effected charge rate.

Correct. USB 2.0 and 3.0 charge at the same rate. The extra 3.0 pins are just for data.

I know I can use a micro USB to charge but can I use it for file transfer too?

USB 2.0 allows for up to 100 mA to be drawn on the 5 volt line. USB 3.0 allows up to 900 mA while exchanging data and 1.5A while not exchanging data. So the phone will most likely (I haven't looked at the specs from the phone's side) charge a lot faster on a 3.0 jack than on a 2.0 jack. (This is all from the USB specs. What the Note 3 does, what the cable is capable of and what your particular USB ports are capable of are things I can't address.) The charger that comes with th phone (the little white one) can supply 2 Amps, and I can tell you from personal mneasurements that it can charge a fully discharged battery a LOT faster than the 100 mA available from a USB 2.0 port.

@Pep: Sure. I use the microUSB port to transfer files to and from the phone all the time. Haven't tried the throughput on a USB 3.0 port yet, because I don't have one that can run at full USB 3.0 speed.
