My N7 has all but replaced my PC

My PC is the Asus 1215N netbook - not very large but still over 3 pounds with slipcover, AC adapter, and wireless mouse. My N7 weighs just 1 pound with its DeviceWear case and AC adapter, and it is much smaller.

Every morning pour a cup of coffee and check my email and the weather forecast. I then launch the Opera browser and look at the news and sometimes sports. I review credit card charges and checking account activity. If there is any new checking account activity, I enter transactions into Money Manager and verify the balance. I also update my cash flow forecast spreadsheet using Documents To Go. Then I look in on several forums that I follow, including this one. I use FlashFox to play today's sudoku. If there have been changes to the Money Manager database or cash forecast spreadsheet, I copy them to my Windows Home Server. If I am at home, I use Astro File Manager to make these copies over my home network. If I am on the road, I connect to my PC at home using Team Viewer to make these copies. I then 'remote in' to my home PC using Team Viewer and launch the Windows Home Server Console to backup my Windows Home Server.

I didn't think the N7 tablet could replace my PC, but it pretty much has. By the way, this text was dictated. Obviously, some corrections were needed, but that was mostly capitalization.

Dictation works amazingly well. We had a stack of printed recipes that we wanted to get into My Cookbook. We dictated ingredients and directions and mostly it worked very well. There was one problem when my wife dictated five slices of prosciutto and it came out five slices of ferocious dog. :D

The lack of a keyboard is not a big problem when dictation works so well.

tablet is nice but it can not replace my pc or laptop. Just yesterday, I burned a dvd, then I sync'ed my Garmin 500, then I looked for few deals on pc hardware which took me just a few minutes to go through dozens of sites.

Last time I burned a DVD was probably 6 years ago now. Many PC laptops don't come with DVD drives these days, and neither do the current Macbooks. Everything seems to have gone to solid-state storage around here, USB drives which can hold much more data than optical media. Even movies on DVD rapidly seems to be going the way of VHS now, and the DVDs that I do see on sale seem to be mostly low-budget Kung Fu or anime movies...LOL. It's like every TV and set top box I see now has a slot for USB drives. Even the DVD players all seem to have USB, so that they can play MP4, XviD and MKV movies/TV shows.

As for GPS satnav, I use my phone with AutoNavi. Don't even need a PC to sync and update that. I used to have a Garmin satnav, and that did require a PC to sync and update it.

However I do use a small 10 inch laptop to prepare lessons and to teach in the classrooms. Not found a tablet that can easily replace my Lenovo S110 yet, that I use for work and travel. I am talking about what I see and do here in China. One thing you can't buy Nexus devices here, not officially. Although tablets along with Android netbooks have become incredibly popular, especially in the last year or two, mainly because of low-cost compared to buying a full-blown PC.

I meant Garmin Edge 500 and I was burning an OS for another PC. Again there are apps which are not available for Androids such as NZB downloaders and news readers.

I guess its a replacement if you read news in the morning and check weather.

I used to use a SatNav app on my phone, but now I use Sygic on my tablet. The maps are stored on my tablet.

With TeamViewer I can run any Windows app by remoting in to a PC at home. I've run Excel, Firefox, and Front Page that way.

edge 500 is a cycling gps computer. Just because its garmin it does nothing to do with maps. Remote access is nice but it miss features such as holding left mouse and selecting things, there few more incompatibilities, but can't remember all. PhoneMyPc is very easy to set up and very easy to use.

I love tablets but you can't play battlefield 4 on it and no I wouldn't waste my money on game consoles.

I think the basic premise here is the OP, as was I, were so surprised at how much we used to do on a laptop we are able to do as well or better on an N7. We aren't saying it will replace a PC entirely.

Exactly, Unforgiven. We will be heading off on a road trip shortly and will take both our N7s and our netbooks simply because it is no big deal to take them in the car. I routinely use both my N7 and my netbook now because the netbook is sitting in front of me and is powered on. I won't be surprised if I leave it in the car and never use it while on the road. Since I don't play computer games, that is not an issue.

Every morning I look at the weather and see if it going to rain. I ride my bike everywhere so I need to know. I check the news to see if any thing happened at all. I listen to music while I make breakfast and watch a vlog on YouTube. I leave my nexus home while I'm at school because I have a note for school. But when I'm home I love to play games on my tablet. Gt racing 2 is amazing.

I do a lot of things with my N7 too. But no way can it replace my desktop. I do a lot of video encoding and also Power Point presentation. I would not know how to do that without my i7 and my 22" screen.

On the other hand, I cannot do navigation in the car with my desktop, LOL.
Yeah, that 22" screen would be tough in the car. :D

Lots of good information, but my N7 supplants my desktop like many others. I have a beast of a desktop, a liquid-cooled 6-Core AMD 3 GHZ, 16 GB RAM, 2 each 1 TB hard drives, Dual Blu-Ray Burners in a Cooler Master HAF-X Case connected to a 1080p 24" monitor that looks like this:

Enclosures -> HAF X - Cooler Master

I can burn DVDs and Blu-rays from Red Box and I can't do that on the N7, obviously. But the N7 is slick and it seems more of a personal experience to me and it just plain works and it works much like my Samsung Galaxy phone. GMail, Facebook and Google+ automatically work, polling in the background. No need to switch tabs or open another web page, just touch the icon.

I too am interested in the possibilities of the upcoming new N10. Being a Nexus, you know it's gonna be bad ass!!! How will I justify spending the money on a new N10 after paying like $293 after tax for the N7 not that long ago? Haha! Fancy problems! I also have a Google Chromebook, but that just sits unused in the corner.....
