Would you upgrade from an S3 or S4 for this?

I've taken allot of blurry images with my Galaxy S4 at party's to know it doesn't cope that well, optical image stabilization is a very desirable feature to have on a camera phone.

....at parties, and everyone is all jumping around and dancing? You're using LED flash and probably a slow shutter speed because it's dark. OIS can't fix that. To take good pictures in that situation you really need a xenon strobe flash, or a fast shutter and large aperture, that can properly freeze the action, which basically means a real camera. OIS is mainly to try and stop camera shake causing blurred images, but it can only do so much. It's not really a substitute for holding the camera steady in the first place.

The S4 can take good pictures in night-time situations but you have to hold it very steady, preferable resting on something solid like a wall or tripod.

No, the people I was taking photos of were not dancing.

They were blurry because of the lighting and camera shake and OIS does help in these situations.

I never said it would eliminate all blurring from camera shake, but you will get more good photos with OIS than without it.

Well, sample photos here look very nice to me for pre-production unit. Will see with production unit in my hand but I'm not worried on camera in S5.

Preview and hands on at the event, they're not really reviews. I'm sure the photo quality will be great but it could have been a bit better, also for video DIS usually means shaky cam. :)

Benchmark results are interesting but we know Samsung and others cheat in benchmarks so take with few table spoons of salt.

On a side note in the 3dmark benchmark the HTC One is delisted for cheating while the Galaxy S4 is not. :D

you're aware the s4 camera has a sports mode and a night mode? both are probably more appropriate camera settings to use in the environment you describe. you'll likely have the same blurry image issue with the s5 unless you change the camera settings. i wouldn't set expectations where you have them for ois or you'll probably be disappointed. that said i do expect the s5 camera to be better than the s4 camera but not significantly.

personally i haven't seen enough improvement from the s4 to the s5 to warrant using my upgrade. maybe if the early rumors were true i would, but the reality of what the s5 is just isn't enough for me. i'm still very impressed with the overall performance and refinement of the s4.

I agree that 3GB of Ram couldn't hurt. I was just wondering if your 2GB GS4 was running slow or lagging or something because mine has no issues at all. I don't see any need for more RAM yet, so it wouldn't be a current worry or concern of mine.

Now internal storage space? That's another story ... :)

no dont have lag as such but if im putting in money to get something new it should be more of an update than what i already have. There should not have been a 16gb model. The only advantage of the s5 is it still has a memory card slot which i need(already have a 64gb card).

S3 user here and nope, i'm gonna pass on the S5 and probably get this:

OnePlus One price information revealed

should be out by summertime.

I had an idea this was coming, the Chinese CyanogenMod phone. This is what I'd probably get as well next rather than another Samsung, especially now with their locked bootloaders, KNOX, anti-tamper e-fuses etc.

Personally, no... not worth it going from an S4 to an S5. If I were to get a different phone now, it would be the Note 3... and I may just bite when they release the Note 4

My biggest issue right now is bloat. Loads of junk on my S4 when I got it, that wasn't there (or was removable) on my wife's Note 3. What are they thinking, adding more back on the S5?

Wasn't supplied by a carrier was it? I've handled a couple of S4s that came from Hong Kong, I thought they were OK, there was only really Samsung and Google stuff on there, which is what I'd expect. There was no third party junk like Facebook, etc. The S5 adds a heart rate monitor app apparently.

Hey guys,

I was just wondering what you think about upgrading from the Galaxy S4 to the S5?

I was pretty disappointed by it to be honest. Waterproofing would be a plus point! And the camera is nicer although it's pretty good on my S4 anyway. Heart rate monitor is just a gimmick.

The Snapdragon 801 processor seems to be identical to the Snapdragon 800, just with a bit of overclocking! I reckon if I just root and overclock my S4 it would perform similarly?

Is the performance going to be much better do you think?

Cheers

Nope, if you value some of the new features then maybe.

Snapdragon 801 is faster but not buy a huge amount, bare in mind there are three main versions of the Galaxy S4, Snapdragon 600, Snapdragon 800 and Exynos 5 Octa 5410.

I would wait a little for Snapdragon 805 devices to be released, then it will be time to upgrade, earliest these will probably arrive is may.

Alternatively there are many Snapdragon 800 devices that are great value compared to the Galaxy S5.

Galaxy S5 just isn't that attractive, in more ways than one.

If you have a Galaxy S4 (i9506) then yes a slight overclock and you can match the Galaxy S5 because it uses Snapdragon 800, but not with the other versions of the Galaxy S4.

the s5 is clearly better than the s4 in all aspects but i dont think most people would fork out the money or an upgrade for it.

that being said, Id never touch an s4 but I would definitely get an s5!

"While many people have assumed that the Galaxy S5 has basically the same display as the Galaxy S4 — but just a bit bigger — that isn’t the case. Our detailed lab tests show that there have been significant display performance improvements in almost every single test and measurement category, resulting in a number of new records for smartphone display performance. Based on our extensive tests and measurements, which we present in detail below, the Galaxy S5 is the best performing smartphone display that we have ever tested — and it has raised the bar for top display performance up by another notch." - displaymate/gizmodo

and its waterproof for 30 minutes omg!

If I was coming from an S4 I doubt I would upgrade, but I've been with the S3 for two years and its definitely time for a change. I wish that it shipped with 3 gigs of RAM to better future proof the device and I also wish they would have given higher consideration to the design of the phone. But overall I'm pleased with the spec sheet and it will be a huge jump from an S3. Plus Radioshack is offering the S5 for $150 if you preorder and I can get around $100 for my S3 so this is really a no-brainer.

To be honest, I have both phones and unless you're going to root the S5 I wouldn't get it. It's more Samsung bloat and plasticky build. While the display is a large improvement over the original it just seems like another very minor change.

As I'm sending this from an HTC One I understand most won't take this seriously, but feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer.

I was actually watching your videos of the S5 last night and didn't realize you were on the forums lol. I have a question about the fingerprint sensor. I've seen in some videos that you can scan with one hand instead of having to do a vertical swipe, thus requiring two hands; like this
Galaxy S5 Fingerprint (one handed operation) 갤럭시 S5 한 손 지문인식률 높이기 - English Subtitle - YouTube

Have you tried scanning this way and how effective is it?
