Hi all

I'm getting random reboots on my Note 3, in each case whilst the phone is sat idle on my desk.

Yesterday I missed a very important call because my phone decided to turn itself off (over 70% battery remaining) and would not restart until I pulled the battery.

Anyone know of any apps that I can download to troubleshoot what is causing the reboots please?

I haven't installed any new apps at all recently but I do know that some apps have been updating themselves in the background, even though I have told them not to.

I'm actually getting a bit sick of the many issues with this phone, that whilst small, all mount up to a less than stellar user experience. Both of the last two Samsung devices have been a real pain in the proverbial and I doubt I will be buying another Samsung in the future and I will explore other options instead, Apple included.

Well as you said getting these small things right is essential to an enjoyable user experience and alot of care is taken to ensure that these things go smoothly, as I am currently experiencing.

Making sure applications do not automatically update: Can I ask what method you used to turn off the automatic updates?

Does your phone have a custom ROM installed or is it rooted with customizations?

Go to Play Store > My Apps > Menu button and untick Auto-update

Fortunately not. It's still stock, as written in my device info in the sidebar under my name. I'd dread to think what would go wrong with it should I try to root.

Unfortunately they can still auto update if you've only used the menu button option, as the detailed settings inside Google Play may still have "Auto-update apps over wifi only" on.

You need to open Google Play and click on the 3 small stripes located at the top-left corner of the Google Play application, which will then reveal a small section of options, with one of them named "Settings". You need to click on the "Settings" option and then look for the new "Auto-update apps" option after that and click it, then choose "do not Auto-update apps".

Also try turning off "Screen Rotation" from your system settings and see if it is still rebooting randomly.

After another round of factory resets and errors creeping into the device, I decided to cut my losses and run.

I've sold the Note 3 and decided to get another device to go with my HTC One.

To be honest, this is the second Samsung device i've had that has been no end of problems and I will not be buying another one. I am SO glad to get rid of it and get a phone I can rely on.

Honestly it sounds pretty device specific, I have never had any random reboots on my device, even when rooted. I know that those are typically caused by your system getting so hung up that it just needs to turn off to prevent damage to the hardware, or the hardware can't even handle the request and the only thing it can do is turn off.

I would maybe have suggested trying to root the device just to check it out before giving up entirely.

Good luck though, I hope you enjoy your new device thoroughly :)
