Help Headset Mic not working

Hello. I'm new to Android and recently purchased the Samsung Galaxy Note SGH-1717, OS 2.3.6 on AT&T. I've had this for a week and any phone calls were either on the phone directly, speakerphone, or bluetooth. I've tried 3 different wired mic headsets and the mics aren't working. The headsets are plugged in as deep as possible and the hearing out of the earbuds is fine. All 3 headsets I've tried have the 3 button controls. The center button is the only button that works: pausing, skipping forward, or skipping backwards; and only works in the Songbird app. I've cycled the power and that hasn't helped.

The headsets I have are Apple inner ear, klipsche, and vmoda. All 3 work fine on the iPhone 4S and in voice recording apps.

Does anyone think it's the phone or are the 3 button earbuds not compatible with the Galaxy Note? It's interesting the phone recognizes the center button, but not recognizing the microphone or the volume buttons. If this isn't compatible, it may be a deal breaker. If it is compatible, I'll post another question on using the 3 button in other music apps as not sure why Songbird is the only app it works.

Appreciate any guidance!

Update on my resolution. I called Samsung and they say they've tested Samsung headsets successfully on the Note, but couldn't guarantee non Samsung headsets would work. They agreed my other headsets should work. I went to the AT&T store and they did some testing and agreed the phone may be broken. They used their own headset that they know works on their Android phone (not the Note). After AT&T swapped my phone out, we did a test on my headsets and the mic didn't work. We tried on 2 different sets and none of them worked. The rep found some Samsung headphones and the mic did work. They didn't have any Samsung headsets to sell, so we tried a Skull Candy and that worked and ended up buying the Skull Candy brand which I'm not a fan of.

As a guy who makes a living supporting technology, I'm scratching my head on how a different brand headsets can have a mic compatible or not. The AT&T rep thinks when AT&T finally pushes out Ice Cream Sandwich that it may make my other ear buds compatible. For now, I'll hang on to this phone and try to learn and love it. So far I'm really digging the big screen, but trying getting used to the Android Market and OS.

Thanks for reading!

i also have the same problem. i have an LG optimus phone and i just bought a sony earphones with mic and volume control. well when i plugged it in, i can hear the music but when i was calling somebody, they couldn't hear me but i can hear them. I tried them on the iphone and it works out fine. So I'm not sure what headset to buy, should I buy skull candy too? Is there another brand that works like panasonic or JVC?

I'm wondering if there's a patent on the 3 button headset that will exclusively work only on iOS. I found that other non-3button headsets work fine for phone and music player. I did find an app called Jay's Headset Control that lets you control the music player similar to iOS. One press and hold turns volume up, double press and hold on 2nd press turns volume down, double click to advance next song, etc.

It turns out that the issue is that there are currently two competing standards for the physical layout of 4-pin headphone jacks. The industry standard is to have the left channel be the tip, the right channel on the next ring, the microphone on the next ring and the ground as the final ring (also called the sleeve).

When Apple released the iPhone 4, it had an exposed metal case which interfered with the ground of the phone when a headphone jack was plugged in. To solve this, they switched the ground and microphone lines and created their own standard.

Unfortunately, the majority of companies adopted this new standard to keep their products compatible with the iPhone and its accessories, but others did not - Samsung among them. The result is that most Samsung devices won't work with iPhone compatible headsets simply because the hardware layout is different.

Hope this helps to clear things up a bit!
