Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] VM LS720V7 - Updating, Rooting, and Unbricking

Hello,
There's great info in this thread, but reading through it all can be overwhelming for those of us who aren't very familiar with all the terms. Xclusive36, any chance you could post a video of the process for updating a rooted LG F3? Seeing it done might be easier than reading it.

Just a thought, and thanks

John

Did you grant your Root File Manager permission with SuperSU and Root File Managers usually have a setting to allow root explore? If it does make sure that is set to root or on as the case may be. If you answered yes to both then for some reason the /dev folder is r/o (it should be r/w after rooting). You will have to mount the folder as r/w manually. There are apps at the Playstore you can use if you're not familiar with the commands or using a terminal.

I'm using ES File Manager and everything is set in SuperSU to autogrant Root from the start so that shouldn't be an issue.

I'll have to look around and find the terminal commands for that and see if it fixes the issue. Been awhile since I've messed with the terminal end.

Go to the Playstore and install "Remount" app. See if that works for you.

If you would, post future replies on the cwmt recovery thread. There is another member with the same problem already posting. Makes it a little easier to find a solution when we can all work together. Thanks :D

Hi, folks.

Just in case no one is watching the regular F3 forum, I've got a problem with restore.

I installed a superSU binary update yesterday and the horrible thing rebooted my phone into a factory reset. I lost lots of stuff but I'm mostly sick because I lost the last voice message my mom left me before she got in the car accident and ended up in the hospital, where she passed away.

In any event, I've got a backup, but I can't get CWM to restore it. My thread is here: http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-f3/876171-cwm-restore-issue.html

Please take a look and give me some pointers, please.

Sent PM. Did no post as not sure if comments fully address your experience.

**As with any guidance provided you assume all risk using the information. You always run the risk of bricking your phone. All information provided by myself and the below forum members is given as guidance only.**

The following guidance will assist you with updating and/or rooting your VM Optimus F3.

To check your current software version select System settings → About phone → Software information → look at software version (ex. LS720ZV7 is v7)

This post provides information that will assist with updating form software LS720V6 → LS720V7.

If you are currently on software LS720V5 you will need to update to LS720V6.

Information on updating LS720V5 → LS720V6 can be found at the following link:

LS720V6 Update Info

If phone is soft-bricked then select this link to go to the VM unbrick post.

The unbrick post provides download links for VM software versions 5, 6, and 7

NOTE:

  • If your phone is currently not rooted then be patient and you will receive a prompt to accept the Over-The-Air update. Follow prompt and phone should reboot and install the OTA update without issue.
  • If phone is rooted, acceptance of the OTA will soft-brick your phone.

Root – v7 requires TowelRoot

SuperSU

BusyBox

** Back-up all data, using your preferred method (Titanium, My Backup Pro, etc.), before altering any files **

If you are currently on LS720V6 and rooted please see the 2nd post for guidance on updating to LS720V7 and preventing a soft-brick.

ROOTING STOCK V7

Using File manager of your choice locate the downloaded files.

Root v7 software using the downloaded TowelRoot apk
  • Enable Unknown sources on your phone, normally this option located on Settings > Security.
  • Install the downloaded app
  • Now run the app, just tap the “make it ra1n” button to start rooting.
  • Let the app perform the root job

After root install the SuperSU apk. Open SuperSU and update binaries if required.

Close SuperSU app then locate and install BusyBox apk. Open BusyBox app and install.

You can now uninstall the Towelroot app.

If you would like to install the custom recovery please follow the following link

INSTALL CWMT RECOVERY

At this point you should successfully be rooted and running the v7 software.

I want to thank gherkaul and xclusive36 for working with me on trying to minimize the impact to VM users with the v7 update. Hopefully this guidance will help the community with the Virgin Mobile V7 software update.

I am trying to locate the .dll file needed to return my F3 to stock. I have the flash tool and I have the drivers, I just can't find the correct .dll file. All the links that I've came across are either moved or deleted. I know this is a longshot since your post is so old but any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
