Help Problem with Google Play

Hi all. I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1, running ICS 4.0.4. When I use the Google Play Store app to update existing or download new apps, when I select an app, Play itself freezes and then crashes: Unfortunately Google Play has stopped. I've installed a previous version of the app that works, but when I run it, it updates itself to the current version and I'm back to square one.
So, how the heck do I stop the Play app from updating itself? I have automatic updating turned off in the settings. Thanks for any help.

I have a very similar problem with my Galaxy Tab 10.1, also running Android 4.0.4. I don't have any earlier versions of Play Store so I am running the latest as at 26 Feb 2015. I get the same error message when trying to install new apps - 'Unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped.' The only option is to tap the OK button. There are no options to report it to Google. So, I cannot install new apps but existing apps do update successfully.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have the same problem with the same tablet.
Download PlayStore 5.1.11.apk from Internet (surch it with Google), copie and install it to your tablet and open the PlayStore after installation . You will do this each time (or don't left the PlayStore).
The PlayStore 5.2.13 gives these problems.o_O
