Some people who applied for the soak test never received an invitation but have received 6.0, and others who never applied for the soak test have received 6.0. Mistakes or a staggered rollout? In any event, everyone should receive 6.0 at some time, but that could be next week or next month if the soak test reveals problems.
If it was an iPhone I doubt that many of us on this forum would own it. Personally, I'd rather have the MXPE running Android 5.1.1 than an iPhone running iOS9. In any case, we'll just have to be patient and wait for 6.0 and hope that the release is relatively bug free.
What "more" would you need? I can make calls, surf the web, stream music, check the weather, message my family and tether my laptop... almost simultaneously. Having never owned an iPhone, I can't compare the two worlds objectively... but I do prefer the openness of Android to the "walled garden" of iOS. My 2¢
Yeah, and widgets and the notification panel have been baked into Android since the beginning. So they lift the best features of each other, file lawsuits left and right and - quite frankly - they're starting to become irritatingly homogenized. The only real difference left is the openness of Android: and with rooting and ROMming becoming increasingly difficult, even THAT is closing up. Pretty soon the only thing separating iOS from Android will be a fruit silhouette and a price tag.
... and ... if you checkout Android Forums you will find current and old phones. The current phones are about 650.
One company controlling everything vs. many-many companies in competition. Which do you suppose is the healthiest?
This thread is almost identical to the Droid Turbo thread when waiting for 5.0. Look at history and the mess some vendors fell into (Samsung in particular). Motorola skipped that by going from 4.4.4 to 5.1. There was a lot of noise as people waited. There were a lot of grateful users when 5.1 was released.
I'm looking forward to trying out the new OS. Luckily, I haven't seen much of the problems reported here, so I am in more of a position to be patient - even though it's tough (gimme, gimme, gimme)
For your consideration ... when it is released ... you are not give the option to try it out ... after you install it there is no turning back to Lollipop. That is the reason for the caution.
If it is in Soak Test the participants agreed to not discuss it in public forums as a condition of their participation.
The past few soak tests I participated in on the Maxx and Turbo did not go out to everyone who volunteered and in addition went to some who never volunteered (and agreed not to discuss in public). I have never seen an explanation of why.
Is there anything in Marshmallow that would NOT make anyone to update? (An example would be the infamous memory leak that L had when it first came out)
The point is that you don't know until it is tested by a number of different people. That was the purpose of Soak Tests and Motorola is pretty good at it (as pointed out in the handling of 5.0/5.1 on the Turbo).
A lot of people will hold off on installing an OTA for a while to see if problems are reported by other users.
One has to remember that the Nexus is a pure Google device. Google releases a new Android version and it's ready - essentially written - for the Nexus. Everyone else has to take the new Android OS and rework it for their devices. I'm not complaining that we're not the very first ones to get Marshmallow... we're never going to be, unless we buy a Nexus. I'm particularly thankful that we're getting it way ahead of just about everyone else.
I've had MM on my XPE for almost a week now. Meh. There was nothing in it that made my life any better or easier. It did rename my SD card so I had to re-establish all links to the card again. Thanks, Google.
Adaptive storage is a nice feature...but I prefer to stick with portable storage. Have a 64GB XPE with 128GB card.
Doze? Never use it because my phone is always on me throughout the day so it would never have a chance to engage. At night, the phone is plugged in. Don't understand the hoopla about this feature. I use my phone...I don't leave it lying around which is the only time it would Doze.
Permissions? Always root my phones so this is moot.
Google Now...don't like it. Use Nova.
Android Pay. Don't use it. Have credit cards that still work.
Automatic App Backup...too little, too late. How about allowing for a full backup or image? I'll stick with Titanium.
The rest is fluff. Maybe others can/will get excited about MM but I'm not. Unimpressed.
They might be there. They might be corrected and not be there. They might be there and be worse.
Each release is a large patch of a previous release running on the same device. That is the reason OTAs fail on root-ed devices where pre-installed modules were deleted. The patch failed because the thing being patched doesn't exist.
Experiences of people using devices other than yours may or may not be an indication of how it will be on yours.
