Disclaimer: I put my phone on the line to try this and it worked fine for me doing the steps I detailed below.
It is possible to brick your phone doing this so be careful. I am not responsible if you end up with a ~$500 paper weight.

If you are still with me, here are the steps:
Guide is has been updated from the original VS740 Version for use with the LG US780.
MUST HAVE LG MOBILE UPDATER INSTALLED AND USB DEBUGGING ENABLED AND THE PHONE MUST BE IN LG SOFTWARE MODE!
To enable USB Debugging (USB Cable must not be plugged in): Settings>Developer Options>USB Debugging
To enable LG Software Mode: Settings>PC Connection>USB Connection Type>LG Software
Download Drivers, CAB File, LGMU, LGTools (Only if you do not have either one of these installed)
Step 1: If you haven't done so already download The full package, (Drivers, CAB, LGMU, and LGTools
and save to the root of your C:\ drive.
Step 2: Open the zip file, and drag the files to new folder in the root of your C:\ drive
Step 3: Open this folder that you have just extracted the files to.
Step 4: Rename the cab file to US78011a_03.cab (If you do not see the .cab extension DO NOT add it. Also You may not have to rename it if you downloaded it as the same name.)
Step 5: Extract the zip file's contents to this folder and connect USB cable to phone.
Step 6: Run KP500-Utils-En.exe in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2 and as an Administrator.
(Only if you are not running windows xp)
Step 7: Choose option I.
Step 8: Type US780 when it prompts for phone model number. Press Enter.
Step 9: Type US78011a_03.cab when asked for the cab file. Press Enter.
(You do not have to tell it what directory the cab file is in)
Step 10: Type US78011a_03 when prompted for the version. Press Enter.
Step 11: It should now tell you it is loading and the lg mobile updater screen will appear with a log window below it. It will then start reading information from your phone and then it will flash it.
If the firewall says its trying to access the web allow it.
Your phone will switch to a screen that displays the LG logo and says: DOWNLOADING! DO NOT UNPLUG!
NOTE: If for some reason the updater cannot find your phone, you can power off your phone and place it in download mode. To place the phone in download mode: Power the phone completely off, press and hold Vol + and plug in the USB Cable
It will flash the update to your phone and takes around 30 minutes to 1 Hour to complete (Most of the time less).
Once complete it will boot up and show the US Cellular Boot animation.
It may look like it is hung at that screen but it isn't it just takes a while. Around 10 minutes.
Once this is complete you may unplug your phone from USB.
