Help Phone started acting up then bricked

So this came up all of a sudden (what a weird coincidence that it happened just as my two year contract ended!), and I haven't been able to improve anything on my own. Run down of the issues I ran into starting last Friday (pretty much right after I downloaded the app GroupMe if it matters):

Phone started acting very sluggish and freezing up. Eventually nothing functioned except haptic feedback on the home button. I would usually get notification popups saying "such and such app has stopped responding, quit process? Wait/End" and "Launcher3 has stopped responding". I tried restarting the phone and resetting the cache, but nothing changed. Eventually I pulled my data off and performed a factory reset (but I did hit the option to recover from an earlier point, which redownloaded all my apps.

It seemed to work! It booted up and operated smoothly. For maybe 10 minutes. Then it started freezing up, and eventually the screen would no longer turn on. I could restart it and it would then work fine for a bit, before it started freezing again.

So I did a factory reset and chose the option for a fresh clean install. Now it won't even boot up all the way. Sometimes it'll say "Android is starting...optimizing apps x of x/starting apps" or something like that, before that animation freezes and the phone goes dark. Most of the time it doesn't make it there, just goes dark after some of the bootup animations.

So I'm stuck. Before I chuck it in the woodchipper, is there anything I can do? Force a clean factory install? Rub it with cheetah blood? Or is it bricked for the rest of time?

In a nutshell, download latest RSDlite, then latest firmware for your phone, start phone in bootloader, plug into computer, Run RSD, install stock firmware. No root required.
Alright... forgive the newbie here. Got RSD, got firmware for XT1254, unzipped the firmware, loaded into RSD, connected phone via USB (drivers installed) with phone in the first bootloader screen, hit Start - but I get "Failed flashing process. 2/21 flash partition "gpt.bin" -> Phone returned FAIL.

leave the firmware zipped, and on desktop. Open RSD, plug in bootloader mode phone. Select zip (usin 3 dots) to install. Let RSD unzip, or whatever it wants.

Perhaps a better solution: use the Verizon Repair Assistant from your computer. It's such easier than RSDLite.

If that doesn't solve the problem, it's time to think about a warranty replacement. You may have failing internal storage.

I'd tend to guess that it is not battery related. He is not able to flash a particular partition information on to the phone. The internal memory may be skewed. My Droid Maxx would allow stock flashing, but would only start up with a programmers cord, and even then it would not be the actual operating partition. It seemed to be BT Services partition. If he can't get his hands on a programers cord, it may be a lost cause. My only last recommendation I could have is to download the firmware about 2 more times with a computer. It just may be that the first download was compromised in some way.
