Is there an easy way to answer calls? Nothing shows on my screen when it rings. I have to swipe from the top just to get an answer button, then swipe again when the phone screen opens.

You don't need to swipe. Just press answer or decline. Same for the reject message icon in the bottom left

That's the issue. When my phone rings, the screen stays dark. Absolutely nothing appears on-screen while the phone is asleep.

Have you tried a factory reset? Unless another app is in the foreground, you should see the dialer call dialog which is the bumping contact photo at the bottom which you slide up to answer or down to reject. There's also a message icon to the left that allows you to reject a call with a text message follow up.

Do you have a screen protector on the phone? if so, try removing it.
This is a common issue with protectors that cover the sensors on the phone.
