So I get a text and look at it then deleted it. It was an important text. It was also from a number that was not on my contact list. I want to go find that number it was from and respond but can't get the number because I deleted the text when I saw it. Also the adapter that connects my phone to the MAC computer I have is not working. How can I retrieve the text and find the number it was from?

Sorry, but unless you have an automated backup (such as SMS Backup+) running it's gone. It wasn't stored as a separate file but as an entry in a database in an area of storage that an unrooted user has no direct access to, so you cannot simply run some file recovery software to find a deleted file.

What adapter do you mean?

It is possible to directly recover deleted text messages from Android, but you should make sure you have backup files somewhere.
1. Google account, if you have a google account for your android phone and open the automatically sync, you can try to recover from google account.
2. Offcial PC software, generally speaking,an Android phone need to upgrade in computer via a official PC software, such as Samsung PC studio, and this application have a automatically backup function, when you connect the phone to computer and launch the application, it will make a backup for your phone data, thus you can try to find the backup from PC studio.
3. 3rd-party android assistant - FonePaw Android Data Recovery, which is similar with PC studio, and it is more convenient, and the backup is more obvious.

Can you give an explanation of how to do this, in detail, provided that you know from personal experience that it works. Many of the applications that claim to do this rely on fake recommendations to sell, which makes it hard to judge their effectiveness. So I would like to hear from someone who has actually done it themselves.

Text messages, typically SMS and MMS, are stored in your phone not as distinct, individual files, they're integrated inside of a mini-database file. The texting app reads and writes text messages to that database file, it isn't working with dozens or hundreds of individual text files stored in your phone. So recovering a deleted text message is not the same as recovering something like a deleted photo, the former involves manipulating data inside a database file while the latter is a matter dealing with your phone's file system.
If you're lucky, whichever texting app you're using might have some kind of 'history' option buried in a menu that will allow to retrieve recently deleted messages, or if you rely on a third-party texting service as some store messages in their online servers (most carrier-based texting does not).
