My cousin is going on a cruise, with stops in Cuba, Belize, Cozumel, and...some other place. Someone sternly warned her that she'd be charged a bundle for taking pictures there with her phone.

I attempted to break things down logically.

I said that, first, photos are stored on the phone. Then, if she uploads them to Apple's cloud, they're stored there, too, and if she normally does this automatically, her phone will look for a connection in order to complete that task.

I said that she should be able to adjust her settings to turn off auto-upload until she gets home, and if she keeps the phone in airplane mode while travelling, she shouldn't incur any data charges from taking pictures.

I'm right...right? :thinking:

(I actually feel like an ass asking this, but the iPhone user who gave her the stern warning was quite adamant about it.)

Here's my thoughts..
Some cruise ships may have metered WiFi, i.e. they're charging by the megabyte for data used, etc, WiFi on cruise ships is usually provided by satellite, and it could actually be quite expensive, like it is on some airlines, e.g. $5(USD) for 1MB I've seen. And the iPhone may assume WiFi is unlimited data, which is usually is at home, and automatically upload pics to the iCloud, and you either use up all your expensive data allowance, or you get a huge bill from the cruise line possibly? Android phones can be the same, they also assume that WiFi is unlimited data. with syncing to Google, etc, and computers as well, Windows, Linux, and MacOS.

If they're not connecting to the ship's expensive metered satellite WiFi, they should be aright I think, Just use whatever WiFi they find at the ports etc. Turn international data roaming off on the phone as well of course, unless they've got some discounted data roaming package.

If they do connect to the ship's WiFi, to check email or whatever, just make damn sure that any automatic syncing, uploads, downloads etc. are disabled. How you do that on an iPhone, I don't know.

I would think she would be fine as long as she keeps her phone in airplane mode while traveling. But if she keeps the phone in airplane mode the entire trip, why not buy a cheap point and shoot camera and leave the phone at home? Just a thought.

I think just the security of having the phone--with all her contacts' phone numbers and stuff in case of emergency.
