Android Auto

My husband and I have the Google Pixel Xl 3. I use the Android Auto but he doesn't and he drives for his job. I've tried to disable it for him, force stop etc. cause he hates when he wakes up his phone it's there after he's been driving. Is there anyway to stop it from popping back up or reactivating? I've shown how to just swype it away and continue to do what he was going to but he doesn't want to be bothered with it.

If you each have your own Pixel 3XLs I can't see why he can't just disable it on his phone. I have a Pixel 2 and have it disabled on mine.

If you are sharing a phone this isn't the solution for you (I don't know about if you have separate accounts: if that setting exists on my Pixel 2 it's not in the places the help file describes). Now I've never used Android Auto, so am hardly an expert, but my guess is that it's identifying that he's in the car using Bluetooth. So unless there is some other BT device he does need it to connect to while using the car, turning off Bluetooth before he gets in the car should stop it. It does require remembering, but it should work.

Ya we have separate phones and accounts but each of us have each other's accounts also on our phones for email checking. I'll try shutting off his blue tooth since he doesn't use it for anything like a smart watch or a vehicle that uses blue tooth.

Well if he doesn't use it for a vehicle just making sure it's not paired to the car should suffice (before I disabled mine it never popped up when I was in a car). Though if he doesn't use it at all then leaving it off will save a little power.

But if you have separate phones I don't understand why just disabling the app didn't work. That should remove any updates, clear the app's settings and block it from running, which should be more than sufficient. So there's something funny here.

I'll check his settings again today. It's a smart phone and always detects when he's driving even if what he's driving doesn't have the blue tooth capability.

Well a smart-phone shouldn't do that,
not unless it's somehow connected to the car-system, No Bluetooth, what about USB?

I'm regularly in vehicles, like in cars, taxis, buses, 300km/h bullet trains etc. and my phones have never detected driving. Well only the Harry Potter: Wizards Unite game that was complaining about excessive speed.

I'll have to check if his blue tooth is on.

Yeah, my phone is a Pixel 2, so it will have been on the same software release as his (until I installed the Android 10 beta), and I only recently decided to disable Android Auto just because it's superfluous for me. Prior to that I have never connected it to a car and it has never auto-started.

There has to be some way it is connecting to the car and that must be what is triggering Android Auto.

Im not sure what else would need blue tooth in his case.

You can disable this app. Swipe down, settings, apps&notifications, see all apps, Android Auto

Or there is the "Driving Mode" setting

To set it up on the Pixel 3:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Connected devices > Connection preferences > Driving mode.
  3. Tap Behavior. Choose 'Open Android Auto' or 'Turn on Do Not Disturb'
  4. Tap Turn on Automatically. Choose how you would like your phone to detect driving.
