The October Android Security updates for Nexus and Pixel phones are now live. Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6, and Nexus 9 are all seeing updates today.
Google will not offer telephone or online support for Pixel and Nexus devices forever. So the company has listed the dates in which you will no longer be able ot receive these services. They're shown in a graph and are just the same date that they'll also stop receiving security updates.
Google has opened the Android O Beta Program for owners of Pixel and Nexus devices. These are the compatible devices:
- Nexus 5X
- Nexus 6P
- Nexus Player
- Pixel C
- Pixel
- Pixel XL
Someone on Reddit who owns the Nexus 6 said their Smart Lock feature was bugged out and they were unable to use it. However, after the May security update was pushed to their device, they don't have this issue anymore.
If you own any Nexus or Pixel device from Google, you should know that eventually it will not receive security updates. Google has just announced which month the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel and Pixel will stop receiving guaranteed security updates.
Since Google no longer supports the Nexus 6, this has left many looking for a custom ROM to do the job. Android Police has a list of some of the best custom ROMs that are available, along with a list of pros and cons.
The April security patches for Nexus and Pixel devices have started rolling out. Updates for 7.1.1 devices include Pixel and Pixel XL (NOF27D), Nexus 6P (N4F26U), Nexus 5X (N4F26U), Nexus 6 (N6F26Y), and Nexus 9 (N4F26X).
Nexus 6 is also seeing builds of NBD92F and NBD92G on Android 7.0.
Nexus 6 users are reporting that their phones are being downgraded from Android 7.1.1 to Android 7.0 in an effort to bring back support for Android Pay. Google's payment service was inadvertently broken when the company rolled out Android 7.1.1 to the device.
Google recently pulled the March security update for the Nexus 6 due to some issues that conflicted with Android Pay. It looks like they were able to fix the issue quickly as the factory images are back up on Google's website.
With the Nexus 6 no longer receiving anymore OTA updates (other that security patches), an XDA community member has stepped up and fixed a speakerphone echo bug that many people have been experiencing on Android 7.1.1 Nougat.
Yesterday, Google released Android 7.1.2 Nougat for various Nexus and Pixel devices. However, the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 won't be updated to the latest version of Nougat.
Most Nexus 6 units have had the January security patch for some weeks now, but AT&T is now finally starting to roll it out. The update is 26MB large and brings no other known changes.
The Nexus 6 recently received the Android 7.1.1 Nougat update, but some people are noticing a bug with it. When they put someone on speakerphone, the audio drops out and the person on the other end just years a squealing noise.
Just an FYI, it looks like A LOT of specific things (not very likely things in general) have to occur, but knowledge is power.
