AA Settings - What Am I doing Wrong?

In the last 6 months or so I have replaced several Head Units with aftermarket Android Auto capable units in our vehicles. While I'm very happy with the functionality, I'm having issues with Android Auto not giving me 'notification' of new SMS messages. Evidently, when receiving a new SMS my device responds that I'm driving which defeats the purpose of Android Auto. There is no 'tone' or the selected notification sound. Only a notice on the device only that it automatically responded to the SMS with, 'I'm driving right now..."

What would be the appropriate settings be to allow Android Auto to give me notification and not send an automatic response?

This may be a bit too obvious, but just in case, in the Android Auto app settings on your phone, is the "Show message notifications" toggle turned ON?
