you guys. what do you think about the idea of bombarding samsung support with lots of emails regarding our most favorite issue, which is us being stuck at 1.5? i'm not talking about massive email sending by using some tool or bot, just normal mails from real users and many of them. if that doesn't stir some things up, it will make me feel better thinking about those assholes drowning in our pointless spam. a simple question of "will samsung i7500 be updated from 1.5?" is sufficient, i'm sending mine right now, join me if you still have a little faith

I cannot confirm dates for the release of a higher version of the operating system for this model of phone, but please check our website for information on future events and upgrades.
I can state that the unit will not be upgradeable to Eclair (2.1) or Froyo (2.2) as the chipset does not support this. Of course it is possible that other aspects of the handset do meet the minimum requirements.

With regard to your enquiry, I have received a reply from the Product Specialist. This is the full response.
'The information we have available is that the Galaxy will only be updated to 1.6.
It may be possible to update further, however the chipset of the handset would
struggle with this update and would lead to more problems when using the handset.'

ask them to tell the product specialist that froyo's JIT compiler makes it much lighter than donut and the chipset shouldn't have any problem running 2.2


saying the galaxy's hardware can't handle the update just isn't plausible - i'd want them to either do it or admit that they're simply dropping support for a less-than-a-year-old device for no other reason than to save costs and focus on selling new devices

Yeah I think they've probably dropped it completely now. We haven't had any further firmware updates since March.

Well i was talking to some people in the G1 section of the forum. http://androidforums.com/t-mobile-g1/78697-will-there-official-froyo-2-2-update-g1.html

And they seemed to say that there is no problem with 2.2 running on their phone so I don't think the product specialist knows it is being carried out on other legacy devices.

EDIT: sorry just read the update. It is running but not everything is working yet.

samsung are lazy, they dont want to keep making stuff for what they deem as a legacy handset and will make excuses thinking that you know less about the handheld and chipset than them.
if they keep mentioning chipset i would advise them that its the same msm7200a that is in the hero

Whether or not this handset will be capable of supporting v2.2 remains to be seen, as we do not have access to it as yet. The product specialist's comment about issues surrounding the use of v2.1 may be something you feel isinaccurate, but even if the handset is capable of supporting either OS version, there are no plans to incorporate either version in the Galaxy. Any attempt to install anything other than v1.5 (Cupcake) would automatically void the warranty.
