Help Another battery life thread - just switched to CM7

My battery life wasn't that bad before switching to CM7, some users reported extended battery life after loading the CM7 rom. However, I seem to be running out of juice a bit faster than normal, and the top two things that are using it are "Android System" @ 47% and "Dialer" at 47%. I went to sleep last night with 90% charge and woke up with 20%. The only app that was running was an alarm clock app. I didn't make or receive any phone calls, so I'm wondering why on earth the Dialer app used half my charge over night. Cell Standby reports 5% usage and Phone Idle 3%.

Are there any known settings in the CM7 settings that decrease battery life? For instance, I switched the status bar to display dBM instead of signal bars, and I turned on a balanced color scheme (cool).

I also have Juice Defender installed, and GPS & Bluetooth were off, although WiFi was on.

Right now it looks like I'll have to charge every morning, afternoon and evening, even if I don't use the phone much.

There's probably an app process or service that's draining it in the background. Turn off wifi & 3G data to see if it's that or just something that keeps the CPU awake, to try to narrow it down. Also battery stabilizes after at least 1 charge/discharge cycle, especially after flashing a new ROM.

Same way mine was and as your rooted get "Set Cpu" (its legal its their official thread Set Cpu Official XDA Thread
Direct Download (It's Legal)
Set smartass (unless you have a kernel with interativex) as governor go to profiles and add one when screen off 368 max this should help as when screen offs it makes max proccessor speed at 368 so it can't run as fast and doesn't die as fast. I now only lose about 20-30% a night with over 80 apps :D.

I think there is an error in reporting what has used the battery (just a guess, could be wrong). Mine will report something similar, but I would lose like 8-12% battery overnight (better than stock for me).

A solution I've found very useful has been to switch my phone to airplane mode when I know I will not be making or receiving calls/texts due to meetings, locations, etc. To keep some contact, I just turn the wi-fi feature back on. This often extends my battery from just over 8 hours to a day or two of regular use.

Not ideal, but it sure helps!

I've been using CM7 for a week now. I turn off 3G and wifi at night I lose about 10% in the 6 hours I sleep. A 12 hour day at work I lose another 60% with light to moderate use. Wifi stays off and 3G off except when using the internet on breaks and lunch. I use wifi an hour or so in the evening and then charge till I go to bed. I am very happy with battery life it was not this good on stock 2.2. With the same schedule it would almost be dead when I get home. I did try the juice defender on stock it made it worse!

BTW today dialer was at 14%

Well I got the dialer down to 5%, I think having the CM7 settings change the signal bars to dBM numerical values was causing the dialer app to be actively pinging the tower or something to get that info, turning it off helps.

However, I still have 'Android System' at 47%, the phone lost about 60-70% of it's charge (100%) overnight while I slept. If I click it I get a list of things being used:

CPU background - 7s
CPU foreground - 5s
keep awake = 6m 44s
data sent, 115KB
data received 395 KB

included packages:

settins
CyanogenMod settings
theme chooser
settins storage
google backup transport
account and sync settings
VPN services
status bar
Android system

Try Battery Monitor Widget (free (ad supported) from the market). It might help you to narrow down what is causing your battery drain.

In that app, at the bottom, go to Tests (you'll need to scroll the icons to the right to see this) --> Usage statistics and you should see this that will give more detailed stats of what's been active:

I just wanted to point out one more thing obvious thing that you already know... If you don't need to use wifi/3g or any other radio, turn it off. Airplane mode will save you loads of battery life.

I turned airplane mode on my phone overnight after fully charging my phone. It stayed at 100% for the 8 hours overnight. See the screenshot below. It dropped at the end of the screenshot because I turned on the screen and started using it.

Actually leaving the cellular radio on for incoming calls & SMS uses minimal power too (1%/hr). 3G data, wifi, BT, GPS uses a lot more, so I usually have those off. Just use Quick Settings app or CM's power notification widget to have quick access for toggling.
