So I bought the GF a nook color. and when she was at the house of course she left her charger and her cable.

I tried to hook it with a microusb cable from my DroidX. and use my DX charger brick. neither seemed to work.

Since my dealings with HTC. I began to wonder if a straight cable will work on said device. or if I need to cut one open to and re-wire it for a simple charger cable.

Does anyone know. has anyone used just a basic microUSB cable on the nook color and it charges perfectly?

You have several problems.

The NC is a 2 amp charger vs. 1 amp for the DX and 1/2 amp for your computer's usb port.

The NC uses a modified cable, apparently for the LED indicator on the cable.

There have been reports of using a standard generic usb cable for the NC tho. Obviously it will take longer to charge. Charging with it powered-off should help.

I see B&N has chargers and cables available online now for $25/$15. It might pay to have a second one and keep one at each location. :D
 
I have a generic cable that came with my phone (Samsung Moment), and when hooked to my PC, it will charge the Nook, albeit slowly. I haven't tried my phone's wall charger.
 
I've been testing the charger and cable from my Kindle to charge the Nook and it works...slower, but it works. The Kindle uses a standard microusb cable. I've charged the Nook by plugging it into my laptop with the cable, and also by using both the cable and Kindle charger into an outlet. In both cases, it charges at about the rate of 10% per hour. So slower than with the Nook cable and charger, but it works.
 
I realize the amperage thing. but the DX uses a standard microUSB cable, and the charger uses standard pin outs. I have used it on other microUSB devices.

Also glad to see that the nook can be charged off a computer USB port.

Seems I will have to do some more testing.

Lg ally charger working :D already broken my charger :( oh and i cant use my nc while its being charged or it wont move
 
I updated my comment above where I stated the DX used a modified usb cable that included pins for hdmi. I saw the hdmi port on it and realized I was wrong. :D

Every time she is over here and I have all my cables and what not to try out. It seems I have my hands full and run out of time. :D

Otherwise thanks for correcting that, I was going to say something.

Meanwhile what I do know. nook cable on my generic Scoche USB car adapter, works fine. Can't keep up with all the power drain, but it does charge, but shows charging (usb).

Also generic cable should work fine. as far as wall adapters I think I has a plan.
 
One odd thing I've noticed about the LED indicator on the cable: If I'm running CM7 from the microSD card, it stays orange even when the NC is fully charged. If I turn it off, or boot into unrooted nook, the LED will change to green when fully charged. Does this mean that the NC OS software is used to change the LED color? Does this affect the actual charging (and more importantly, does it stop charging when the battery is full)?
 
Later versions of CM7 had battery issues (Premature battery failure) where batt % was off and it would power off around 20% instead of closer to zero. Supposedly that was fixed with versions in the 90's and newer. Also, have you flashed with a fully charged battery? You might need to recalibrate.
 
I've seen that on other devices also. It seems that there's a line at 'charged enough' that is just a little bit below 100% charged.
I presume some engineer somewhere decided that charging to 97% (or whatever) is a sufficient charge to not cause the battery to fail prematurely (which I'm led to believe that is less of an issue with these batteries anyway).

I've noticed that the last 3% takes a long time, a trickle charge as Dave noted, so there is probably some of "Let's turn the light green at 97% so the users won't complain about how long it takes to charge the battery" going on also. Or, that could just be me being old and jaded. :)
