Connection to Google encrypted?

I was wondering if the connection from my Android to Google (e.g. Sync, GMail, etc.) is encrypted? Using my Milestone often in free WiFi spots and wouldn't be happy with my credentials being interceptably transmitted.

Does anyone of you know details on that?

Thanks!

its quite interesting:)

ok, ive done the following:

turned wifi and mobile internet off, restarted milestone
when i turned wifi on:
milestone has sent some weird unencrypted cookies to google
logged to gtalk - probably encrypted

then ive tried a google query using the default browser- unencrypted

using opera mini - probably encrypted

sending and receiving an email - probably encrypted

adding a contact - i could see unencrypted transmission, but did not find the contact's data

using gadugadu im - encryption not used. id, status and messages in plain text, but i could not find the password (maybe it is stored on the mobile or im blind)

note: when i say 'encrypted' i mean that i could not find any human-readable data in transmitted packets. i am not saying it is safe:)
