Help Data cutting in and out

For the past two days, out of nowhere my phone has not been able to keep a constant data connection even though I have it turned on. When this happens the 3G symbol will disappear from the the status bar and my battery will drain very quickly because it's trying to find a signal. This will happen constantly throughout the day and in different areas. The even weirder part is that my friend has an Evo as well and he does not experience my issue. We will be right next to each other and he will have a perfect 3G signal and I won't. I have no idea what is happening because I have not changed any of my settings or downloaded any new apps, this is just out of the blue.

Same thing happened to me a few months back...total mystery. I tried all kinds of troubleshooting, but ultimately ended up wiping the phone and starting fresh. Been fine since then.

I would start doing some research on backup apps

I was afraid that was the answer I was going to get, I am prepared to a factory reset I just wanted to explore other options first.
