Hi I'm new to the world of android so trying to get used to all the stuff on here.

Whats the difference between using specific apps e.g. facebook / ebay etc or just going on the web and visiting these places? Do they use a lot less internet allowance? Any other advantages / disadvantages?

    Cheers

Speed and accessibility really. You'll achieve the same thing in the end by going via the website but apps will either streamline the process for the purposes of a mobile phone or e.g. give you live information on your mobile phone homescreen.

The apps are intended to (and generally, but not always, do) make life easier for the mobile user. Bigger buttons, screens formatted for the small screen, etc.
