Hi I am Rupesh from India and I have lenovo a3000h tab and 64 GB external SD card and I want to use it in lenovo tab.

Few months back I was discussing with some people in hydrogen audio ( a forum which discusses about audio technologies) and one person raised question that every android device manufactured up to now supports external SD card of size 2 tb provided there is a slot for it. I have argued that it's impossible because manufacturer places restrictions such as "the phone xyz manufactured by me only supports upto 64 GB" etc.,. He has never accepted me.

He said that if the memory card is formatted with fat file system then any android device can read and write files to it because android has the ability to access external SD card of size upto 2tb. He also argued that it is related to android os and not with hardware. Is it true.

At present I have android tab called lenovo a3000h and its manual stated that it supports external SD card of size 32 GB. I also have external SD card Samsung evo of size 64 GB and it is of type sdxc with uhs1 file transfer. Is there any possibility of using it.

Can anyone of you suggest if it is possible to format SD card I mean to which file system I have to format in order to access it in the tab specified above.

Regards,
Rupesh.

The person with whom you were engaging a conversation with has a very limited concept of file systems and I'd advise you to ignore implementing any technical advice he/she said as that will most likely result in problematic issues you'll need to correct.

That said, Samsung only recently released a 512GB microSD card into the market, the first to reach that large a capacity. Other manufacturers will undoubtedly be following with their own. And yes, you're correct that different phone manufacturers set different card capacity size limitations for different models. There's is no established, set amount, it always varies from model to model (with the disappointing fact that some phones don't include any microSD card slot). You can try that 64GB card as it might work out (emphasis on 'might'), but don't be surprised if it doesn't. And be sure to test it thoroughly for several days if not weeks, don't put anything on it that isn't safely backed up elsewhere. MicroSD cards are not that robust to begin with, add in the fact that FAT, and its variations, is a very dated, inherently limited, fault-prone file system and the end result is cards just simply are not reliable enough for any kind of long term archiving. If you just can't get by with a 32GB microSD card, it might be time to just think about upgrading to a newer phone with more storage capacity.

Check the specs of the Lenovo tablet, it sounds like it can only use SDHC type micro-SDs, which do have a maximum capacity of 32GB. SDXC is a more recent type of micro-SD, that can support much larger capacities, but many older devices can't use them.
