Engadget Review - 1.5mbps ? Still interested?

My money is on incomplete rollout of AT&Ts HSPA+ network. I'd like to see the testers disable 4G and test again (assuming you can disable 4G and/or 3G on the Atrix).

It is not a setting that is turned on or off...you either have a radio in the phone which is capable of managing the signal or not, and are within range of a tower broadcasting the signal at that rate. At best, one would only be able to enable or disable 3G (i.e. HSDPA and HADPA+) in favor of "Edge", and vice-versa.

I think the speedtest.net app is a dog on android and i only use XtremeLabs speed test app.

If an iPhone 4 is consistently producing better numbers than the Atrix, in the same spot, then so be it.

However I also do not put much stock in the speed test "app". I've found, when testing various frame-relay, and T/D circuits, that the www.speakeasy.net/speedtest site to measure speeds more in-line with carrier's service agreements.

I hope that can be confirmed

I've been on T-Mo for over a year with both an HSPA+ unlocked, and Android phones, and the switch to "3.5G" is automatic. The move to HSPA"+" is not as divergent as moving from GSM to LTE, or say CDMA to LTE. HSPA vs. HSPA+ are much more closely related. FWIW, I get 7.44Mbs near a tower exactly 3mi. away, with my signal strength pegged at -51dBm. However at the house, I only manage 3-5Mbs, with a -64dBm avg. strength. Speeds drop to 2-3Mbs in my basement where I avg. -74dBm, and the change from HSPA+ -> HSPA -> UMTS is always automatic and instantaneous.

I'm still with AT&T, and have been for over 7 years, and cannot see the experience being any different.

When Verizon's LTE is getting 25 mbs and AT&T's 4G is getting 1.5 mbs, then there's problem.

At a time Verizon just got the iPhone and AT&T needs a home-run badly... and they're about to release a badass game-changing phone, they send out Atrix phones to all the techies for review without turning their 4G on or at least telling them that 4G has not been turned on? That's just hard to believe!

Per Ookla the verizon iPhone has downloads speeds of .7..... Wow impressive!
