Is the superiority of the Epic 4g cameras (still and video) pretty conclusive? I love my Evo, but the cameras actually matter to me quite a bit (I like to take pictures/video and immediately upload them to youtube/facebook).

For photos for uploading to the internet such as facebook, you can't go wrong with any one of these phones. Just remember to get pretty pictures, it's all about lighting and how you set your camera. :)

i dont think people understand that samsung is investing a lot in the galaxy s line since its being released EVERYWHERE not only is the screen better because of super amoled but its also got gorilla glass so its very scratch resistant..

samsung has big plans for the galaxy s line especially with the samsung media or whatever where you can buy/rent movies/tv shows

everyone saying they had to install swype guess what epic comes stock with it. : )

im going with the epic and a lot of people with evos are just fanboys.

IF...

1. real gorilla glass.
2. have better support
3. better performance as their specs show it should be
4. good community development support like the HTC devices..
5. kb dont have build quality
6. GPS works correctly and accurately like HTC devices.

then i might be on board :D

PS.. wish the phone was not as big.. or have bigger screen with same size phone.

1.they have stated it has gorilla glass in it just like the dell streak.
2.how could they not have better support when they have pushed this line so hard and are making tablets based off of it
3.obviously it will have better performance no fps cap once 2.2 is released for epic the evo will be killed.
4.we already have root for the epic plus we have all the devs from other galaxy s phones waaaay bigger dev community than evo.
5.i have never had a build quality problem with samsung only htc i actually wish i got the moment over my hero.
6.gps issue has been fixed and proven

the phone is NOT that much bigger than the evo people really need to understand that.
YouTube - Samsung Epic 4G for Sprint - GPS Test (vs. Captivate)

Some people seem to not suffer its impact, from my reading and lurking on this - but it's a known defect and is my cause for waiting on the Epic for my wife.

OK - seeing the video - just don't know what to make of that, because I don't know that this isn't a unit to unit issue.

After a very bad set of Moment experiences, I absolutely have to assure WifelyMon that there's no issue with that phone for a certain fact.

As minor as this may seem - not minor at my house.

"We have tested and validated both Network Assisted (indoor) and Autonomous (outdoor) GPS on the Epic 4G. With regards to Vibrant and Captivate, we are currently testing software updates which will optimize GPS performance. We expect to be able to make the updates available in September and will communicate more information and download instructions in the next few weeks."
In other words, the Captivate and the Vibrant have the bug and will be fixed next month; the Epic, meanwhile, should be good to go when it launches on the 31st. Cheers to that, we say."
-engadget
I'll reserve my judgement until I get my hands on one but this sounds promising.

I just got my Evo but now I'm lusting over the Epic. I'm not a fan of the slider, but the idea of a better screen and camera does appeal to me. But the EVO is awfully nice.

I've owned two Samsung phones. My flip failed four years ago, my while WinMo phone from two years ago was quite nice.

What to do. Take back the Evo I just got and get the Epic? Or stick with the Evo.

1.they have stated it has gorilla glass in it just like the dell streak.
This is true. However, the fact that it's Gorilla Glass does not make it immune or scratches or shattering. FWIW, the Evo glass is probably just as scratch resistant.

2.how could they not have better support when they have pushed this line so hard and are making tablets based off of it
How about the fact that the first Galaxy S phones were released in Europe in the beginning of June and GPS problems were known at the time? If there is actually a fix in Sept, then that means it will have taken them three months for a pretty big issue. HTC released a battery fix within weeks and 2.2 in two months. If that's any sort of comparison, it does not make Samsung look any more responsive than they have in the past.

3.obviously it will have better performance no fps cap once 2.2 is released for epic the evo will be killed.
But when will the 2.2 upgrade come? They have thrown out some vague date for the Captivate and Vibrant, but keep in mind that the Epic is not running the same version of Touchwiz and therefore needs a different update than the other phones. I would not be surprised if 2.2 doesn't come until next year. I would be shocked if it came before Gingerbread. Maybe Evo will have Gingerbread before the Epic gets 2.2. Would not shock me.

4.we already have root for the epic plus we have all the devs from other galaxy s phones waaaay bigger dev community than evo.
How is this statement even remotely correct? The Evo clearly has the biggest dev base for Android, and there are multiple custom ROMs, kernels, and whatnot available right now. There are no custom ROMs for US Galaxy phones. Most phones get rooted before they're released or just thereafter. Even the Moto X got rooted. That means nothing these days.

5.i have never had a build quality problem with samsung only htc i actually wish i got the moment over my hero.
From what I've read, that is completely backwards. Hero owners are on the whole much happier than Moment owners.

6.gps issue has been fixed and proven
No, it hasn't. Until someone uses a GPS analysis program that shows the number of satellites locked and the accuracy of the position, it is not proven. If you turn off cell tower assisted on the Epic, the GPS sucks. If you need cell tower assistance like Engadget was told to enable by Samsung, it means GPS is still broken.

the phone is NOT that much bigger than the evo people really need to understand that.
So it's slightly bigger but has a smaller screen? I'll take the larger screen and the smaller size, thank you very much.

I'll also take the screen that isn't tinted blue and makes whites look bluish. I'll take the one without the Pentile Matrix screen so text is crisp up close. I'll also take the screen with responsive capacitive buttons.

The Epic 4G is a great phone and will make Android the mobile OS with the biggest guns in the smartphone landscape. If you fell in love with the look of SAMOLED or want a Hummingbird processor or want a hard keyboard badly or just felt burned in some way by the Evo, I would never begrudge anyone their choice. It's all good AFAIC.

But please, stop spouting fanboy nonsense.

Also, that video shows the GPS isn't exactly perfect. That circle should be a bunch smaller. It seems as though if the GPS is working properly, there shouldn't be a software issue.

We don't know yet if the Epic has GPS problems. Most reviewers have said the GPS works flawlessly but I'd wait and see until consumers get their hands on the device. Just becasue the gps hasn't gone through accurate analysis doesn't mean it will suck. No one knows when Froyo is coming so don't say it won't come out until next year, especially considering the galaxy s tablet will run froyo when it launches. Not all the galaxy s phones have been released so don't judge the dev community numbers yet. Also, there are multiple custom roms available for galaxy s phones if you check XDA forums. The screens on the Evo and the Epic are obviously a personal preference. Don't say stop the fanboy nonsense when some of what you said seemed a bit fanboyish to me.

I Googled for custom ROMs for the Vibrant and nothing came up. I should have just gone to XDA to confirm. However, the point still stands -- the Evo is the preferred Android phone at XDA.

Any time you go point to point versus a fanboy, you will always end up looking like a fanboy. It's practically unavoidable.

Agreed. But the preferred phone may change in the future. I think regardless of what phone has more devs, both will have large communities. Wes Garner is currently working on getting CM6 on the vibrant along with some other devs. You can check the progress here: wesgarner's Profile - GitHub
I'm just glad Sprint is continuing to release quality devices. Choice is good!

Since none of the reviews bothered to use a GPS analyzer, it's up in the air as to whether Samsung fixed the GPS issue in the Epic. But in their initial review, Engadget said that GPS was still borked. Samsung told them to turn on cell assist and then Engadget said GPS was fixed. But if you have to turn on cell assist to make GPS work, then it is by nature broken.

From everything I've read, this looks like is a chip issue that cannot be fixed via software. Since it doesn't seem to affect every user, the chip that contains the GPS radio has a high failure rate. So some will have the issue, and many others will not. But if the Engadget review unit had the problem, the Epic likely will not have any higher or lower failure rate than the Vibrant or Captivate. This is not to say that GPS is unusable, but if you need cell assist, you are at a disadvantage.

You mean the same way they had big plans for the instinct?

You mean the same way they had big plans for the instinct?

There's a bit of a difference between the instinct and the galaxy s series... if you can't fail to see that... then man...

Instinct - 1 Carrier with approx 53 Million subscribers at the time.

Galaxy S Series - The entire global population(about 6 Billion people.) that has access to cellular service.

Gee, just a minor difference there eh?

And also, it was Sprint who talked up the instinct, not Samsung.

Oh so it was sprint fault that the phone sucked? Of course there is a difference this time, its called android.

Way to try and change your argument bud. The Instinct didn't suck, it's actually a decent feature phone. But it was Sprint who tried to over hype it for what it was not.

Wait... 6 BILLION people own cell phones? I did not know that almost everyone in the world has cell phones.

having gorilla glass makes it more resistant to scratches i never said that the screen would be able to with stand everything i just stated that it will be very scratch resistant which is true.

i dont know a lot about the gps problems but from what i have seen it looks fixed on the epic or at least in working order

the epic is running tw 2.5 yes but they can easily update the tw and firmware at the same time just cause its running that now doesnt mean we will run tw 2.5 for ever.

galaxy s is global evos on 1 carrier the dev community will be very big for the epic.and there are roms.

From what I've read, that is completely backwards. Hero owners are on the whole much happier than Moment owners.

actually there are alot of hero owners that complained about the dust getting under the screen me included.

like i said gps works if it gets you to where you wanted to go and gave you the right directions then it seems to work.we will find out on launch day if it really does work though.

So it's slightly bigger but has a smaller screen? I'll take the larger screen and the smaller size, thank you very much.

4 inches is just right i rather have the option of being able to either use a keyboard or on screen kb.

I'll also take the screen that isn't tinted blue and makes whites look bluish. I'll take the one without the Pentile Matrix screen so text is crisp up close. I'll also take the screen with responsive capacitive buttons.

from what i've seen from the vibrant theres no bluish tint i have heard about it but have never seen it.i guess i would rather not have a 30 fps cap cracked usb ports light leakage or a lifting screen.guess thats just me though.

just cause i said that does not make me a fanboy of the epic dont get me wrong i would probably buy the evo if there wasnt those problems or if i didnt have to go through 3 heros because of dust under the screen im just saying past experience i've had luck with samsung just like other people like htc over samsung its preference.

Wait... 6 BILLION people own cell phones? I did not know that almost everyone in the world has cell phones.

not quite sure you read his post he said that have access to cellular service.

Yeah and if that's the case then 6 billion people still don't have access regardless. Why because the signal is in the air? Regardless its a ridiculous statistic that makes no sense at all no matter how you justify it.

I just think he meant galaxy s phones are available around the world on a vast amount of carriers where as the instinct was only available on sprint. You guys keep slamming Samsung for their past but you're failing to look at the present.

Well I never shamed samsung. Their new device is pretty soon. All I said was that the 6 billion figure made no sense.
