Truth be told, I was really anxious about upgrades when I had my Moment, and it was full of bugs. But with my EVO, there's nothing really wrong with it... so a new version of Android isn't a big deal to me. I have 'stock' root, so aside from battery boosts I don't need anything from this phone I can't already get.
Hey Zumaki, long time no see.

IMO, the big feature is not so much 2.3 on the Evo, but the New Sense that will likely be bundled with it. :)

Funny because when I was searching for news, I ran accross a forum (I think it was a HTC forum) where people were all up-in-arms that the EVO wasn't listed as one of the first devices to get Gingerbread. Very interesting to see different perspectives.

Good question, I'm thinking - unless you can connect a sat-radio antenna, it might not. But who knows, maybe the antenna that comes with this phone can receive sat-radio transmissions.

Another possibility is accessing the programs online, if that's the case, then it should work. :)

I'm somewhat confused as well why we haven't gotten GB yet. Considering Sprint is still running commercials for the EVO on TV, one would think that they would be getting GB out to their most popular Android based flagship smartphone ASAP.

Who knows, maybe their just going to skip GB altogether and go right to Honeycomb. If they stop at Froyo it would be a major disappointment for a lot of users.

Everything out there on the stock stuff says that GB is still needing updates.

The new HTC ThunderBolt is still expected to ship with 2.2 - so - it's all a little confusing.

It is my understanding that phones will not be getting Honeycomb, it is a tablet rom.

My understanding was that it was a major revamp to include support for tablets, in addition to smartphones. Forking android for 2 different classes of devices makes no sense. That seems to be the goal of Google anyway, since the developer community has been warned from the beginning by the Android team not to assume anything about screen sizes, etc., in their code so that it will be fully functional on smartphones and tablets.

Not being a polly, I think you're both right.

I can cite _accurate_ google quotes that have round-robined this whole issue with clear statements supporting each position, with no one in the press stepping up to get things deconflicted.

I think the thing on Honeycomb for the phones is to not care one way or the other because they've clear (so far!) saying that Ice Cream (sandwich) will reconcile all of it. Anyway, that's how I'm rationalizing not getting crazy over it for myself.

(And I refuse to refer to a revision by three words, so in future, I'll be calling it Ice Cream regardless of what they do.)

Considering that it's called Android 3.0 I would think it's implied that it will be on smartphones. I mean, can you imagine 3.0 being tablet only, then 3.1-3.3 being smartphone, then 3.4 being tablet again? I think It would drive any non techy utterly bonkers and completely drive them away out of sheer unwillingness to deal with the confusion. If they were going to make a tablet only version of the OS I really think that they would modify the name to show that fact.

As Early said, there are very distinct (and conflicting) reports coming from Google supporting what both of us have said. I have not seen the other reports, just the one stating Honeycomb would be for tablets only.

My prediction of around April is still looking great, although it would be awesome to all of a sudden have an update heading our way right after CTIA at the end of the month. That would be perfect timing, before the April 1 switchover in upgrade policy.

like earlymon.. my prediction for end of feb or early march...
i was wrong. :(

You like your eggs over easy? :D :D

That would be fabulous - but - where do you stand on the idea that HTC will be protecting the ThunderBolt roll-out on Verizon?

If the Evo 3D release is somehow far superior to the Bolt, and then the older Evo goes Gingerbread, that would create a lot of stir for Verizon customers.

Would HTC do that?

I can't tell and could see it going both ways...

does it matter how i like my eggs...
i am sure .. it will come only one way.. scrambled!
:P

i dont think oem care about that too much.
it is the carriers... that worry about that stuff.

sprint wants GB for the EVO.. because that just adds brand popularity.

I don't see why the existence of the Thunderbolt would effect the HTC Evo getting Gingerbread or the release of the Evo 3D. Unless: (1) there is something in the contract with Verizonl; or (2) HTC simply does not have the man power to do both.

Manpower comes into play, as you mention - it's only rational to keep track of so many branches of what is essentially a straightforware distribution for HTC - Sense 2.x and GB.

Right now, Bolt is at 2.0 + Froyo.

i say mid june to mid july.. too much going on in terms of new products and progression forward.. although evo is still sprints flagship phone, i think the evo done what it was set out to do for sprint and now their focused on introducing bigger and better things, therefore putting the evo on the back burner.. i definitely dont think that sprint is nearly concerned as any of us as to when the evo gets updated.. that being said i dont think we're going to be completely left out, we will get the update at some point just dont expect any kind of urgency from sprint or htc as their working on introducing new products not maintaining ones that are soon to be a year old =(
