I'm getting a replacement N1 from HTC. The main reason is that the microphone stopped working after a day. Another reason, though, is that the gMaps GPS doesn't work. It can use wifi and cell towers to approximate, but won't use GPS (wont' find location at all if I turn off wifi).
Anyway, a workaround: download a free gps app (like GPSTest), and run it. Then go back to google maps, and it should be able to locate you via gps immediately.
It seems to be a pretty clear bug, though I'm not sure why other people aren't getting it (it may be that some app I installed screwed up the gps in the first place, and uninstalling it and resetting the N1 didn't fix it).
