Help HELP! My SMS tones done ring!

Howdy All,
Having a wee problem with my HTC Magic
Used to use Rings Extended and Ringdroid, but uninstalled when I could no longer get SMS or any notification tones to ring.
Alarms etc still work.
When I go to Settings->Sounds & Display->Notification Ringtone and select from either Android System or any other ringtone program I try, any tone plays when I select it. But no tone for sms, email or notifications.

Any help appreciated

Try going into each application and setting it's default ringtone directly.
