Hi All
I would like to thank you all for having this discussion.
I received my HTC Magic on Friday and yesterday I sat down to try to get the latest version of Android onto it. I had already synced my contacts via Google Mail so I wasnt interested in installing the sync software but it turns out you have to install the HTCSync to get the drivers in order to run the OS update. Well after a lot of googling on how to do this on Windows 7, which usually ended up at the same place (install the Vista drivers), I found this thread which is the one that fixed the problem.
Turns out I had Motorola phone tools installed and when I removed this, and some other modem drivers, HTCSync (2.0.8 I think) installed OK, without having to have a copy of the Vista drivers.
I think another problem which might exist in the installers (for HTCSync & the Android update) is that the Setup programs do not require elevated privelidges, which is a no-no in the installer world. So I went into the compatibility settings and ticked Vista SP2 Compatibility and Run as Administrator. This seemed to do the trick. I was able to install the HTCSync and run the OS update.
Just thought I'd add my experience in case anyone else comes accross this issue.
Phil
