How can I root this generic Android tablet (or enter recovery mode)?

I finally found the type of Android device I have got, it is known as an Aishuo MID and is the model on the left in the first image of this webpage (with the three buttons to the right of the LCD + single-volume button on the side):

I have tried z4root to root the tablet but at the end of the process it just switches off and doesn

when I connect the tablet to a PC it just pops up with 'HiDROID' then gives up, I can't find PC drivers for this device at the moment.

You tried using the USB driver inside the Android SDK?
